With air, more floral and spice nuances emerge, giving the wine both sensuality and complexity. On the palate, this is full-bodied, broad, and muscular, with a textured, almost velvety attack that quickly reveals a sweet, dense core of dark fruit framed by firm, ripe, yet still quite robust tannins. The structure is powerful but precise, with a driving, energetic backbone that carries the flavors through to a long, lingering finish, where floral tones and cocoa dust reappear. Production
Château Montrose sits on a prized gravelly hillside terrace overlooking the Gironde estuary in Saint-Estèphe, in the northern Médoc of Bordeaux. The terroir is classic Left Bank: deep gravel mixed with sand and clay over an iron-rich subsoil, providing excellent drainage while forcing the vines to root deeply, contributing to the wine’s natural power and intensity. The 2018 vintage was marked by a warm, sunny growing season, producing small, concentrated berries. Grapes (predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) are harvested by hand, with strict sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, parcel by parcel, allowing precise extraction and preservation of fruit purity. The grand vin is then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) for around 18–20 months, with careful élevage to refine the tannins and integrate the oak, before being bottled in large formats such as this 3L double magnum to further enhance longevity.
