Description
Montaudon Champagne Cuvée Charles Barr is a refined non-vintage cuvée that captures the generous, fruit-forward style of this historic Reims house. Crafted primarily from Pinot Noir and Meunier, with Chardonnay adding lift and finesse, it offers a vibrant, approachable expression of Champagne that still feels decidedly premium. Named in honor of the Montaudon family heritage, this cuvée reflects over a century of know-how in blending, cellar aging, and traditional méthode champenoise craftsmanship.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Cuvée Charles Barr shows a bright, pale gold hue with a fine, persistent mousse and lively streams of bubbles. The nose is expressive and inviting, with aromas of crisp apple, ripe pear, white peach, and citrus zest layered over notes of brioche, fresh pastry, and a gentle hint of hazelnut.
On the palate, it is generous yet well-balanced, combining juicy orchard fruit and stone fruit with a refreshing backbone of acidity. Subtle tones of toasted bread, almond, and a touch of honeyed richness emerge as it opens, giving the wine a supple, rounded texture while remaining clean and lively through the finish. This non-vintage Champagne is crafted to be enjoyed upon release but will hold nicely for several years in the cellar, gaining a touch more brioche and nuttiness with short to medium-term aging.
Production
Sourced from carefully selected vineyards across the Champagne region, Cuvée Charles Barr is shaped by the cool climate and chalk-rich soils that underpin Champagne’s precision and elegance. Grapes are harvested by hand to preserve berry integrity before gentle pressing in accordance with traditional Champagne regulations. Each variety and parcel is vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to maintain freshness and purity of fruit. Montaudon’s team then assembles the final blend from multiple vintages, focusing on consistency of house style, before the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in bottle and extended aging on the lees. This lees maturation adds texture, complexity, and the fine bead that defines quality Champagne.
Food & Serving
Montaudon Cuvée Charles Barr is a versatile Champagne that shines both as an aperitif and at the table. It pairs beautifully with oysters, shrimp cocktail, and delicate seafood dishes, as well as sushi, sashimi, and lightly fried tempura. It also complements soft cheeses, smoked salmon blinis, poultry in cream sauces, and even simple, elegant canapés. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass or an open bottle before serving is sufficient for the aromas to unfurl; full decanting is not necessary but allowing it to warm slightly from fridge temperature will reveal more depth.
