Description
Michel Guignier Morgon Canon 2023 is a soulful, naturally made Beaujolais that captures Gamay in one of its most expressive forms. Sourced from old vines in Morgon and crafted with minimal intervention, it combines purity, depth, and a remarkable sense of place. Morgon has long been celebrated for giving Beaujolais wines more structure and mineral intensity, and this cuvée shows why.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a vivid, translucent ruby hue with a fresh, energetic core. The nose is lifted and inviting, with ripe cherry, wild raspberry, blackberry, dried rose petals, and a subtle thread of tea leaf, crushed stone, and forest floor.
The palate is silky yet vibrant, with juicy red and dark berry fruit wrapped around a fine, precise tannin frame. A bright, refreshing acidity gives the wine drive and balance, while the finish lingers with savory, slightly saline and herbal notes. It has the charm to drink beautifully now, but also enough structure to develop gracefully over the next few years.
Production
The grapes come from old, low-yielding vines on the slopes around Morgon in Beaujolais, where weathered granite and schistous soils known as "roche pourrie" lend the wine its characteristic depth and tension. Farming is carried out organically and according to biodynamic principles, with horse ploughing and no synthetic inputs. In the cellar, the wine is fermented with whole clusters using native yeasts, then raised slowly in concrete and large oak vessels with no temperature control, no fining, no added sulfur, and no filtration at bottling.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast poultry, duck, mushroom dishes, charcuterie, and semi-aged to mature cheeses. Serve it slightly cool, around 14–16°C, to keep the freshness and aromatic detail in focus. Decanting is not essential, but a short decant can help open the wine if served in its youth.
Producer
Michel Guignier is one of the most distinctive voices in Beaujolais, known for crafting pure, expressive wines that stay close to nature and terroir. Working organically and biodynamically, he has built a reputation for deeply authentic Morgon wines with real energy and character. His wines are admired by natural wine lovers and traditional Beaujolais fans alike for their clarity, restraint, and sense of honesty.
