Description

Michael Teschke Spätburgunder Wilde Gans 2012 is a rare glimpse into the work of one of Rheinhessen’s most uncompromising artisan winemakers. Crafted from old-vine Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) and farmed with a deep respect for nature, this wine reflects a philosophy that the true quality of a wine is determined in the vineyard. With Teschke having sold his vineyards in 2021, bottles like Wilde Gans have become sought-after time capsules of his singular style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Wilde Gans shows a translucent, medium ruby core with gentle brick reflections at the rim, signaling graceful evolution. The nose is refined and quietly complex, offering red cherry, wild raspberry, and dried cranberry, interwoven with forest floor, rose petal, and a hint of dried herbs. Subtle notes of cedar, spice, and a touch of underbrush emerge with air, giving the wine a distinctly Burgundian sensibility while retaining its Rheinhessen character. On the palate, this Spätburgunder is elegant rather than powerful, with finely etched acidity and silken tannins framing flavors of red fruits, sour cherry, and red currant. Secondary nuances of tobacco leaf, dried mushroom, and a faint savory, almost gamey note add depth. The finish is long, delicate, and quietly persistent, with a mineral backbone that keeps it fresh and food-friendly. At this stage, the 2012 is in a beautiful drinking window, showing mature complexity while retaining enough structure and acidity to continue evolving for a few more years under good cellaring conditions.

Production
Wilde Gans is born in the rolling hills of Rheinhessen, where Teschke worked his vineyards with minimal intervention and a focus on biodiversity. His old Spätburgunder vines were deeply rooted in varied soils that typically include loess, clay, and limestone influences, giving natural concentration and a pronounced mineral line to the fruit. Harvesting was done by hand, often in multiple passes, to select only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, Teschke was known for a restrained, low-intervention approach: gentle extraction, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and patient élevage in small oak barrels, allowing the wine to clarify and stabilize naturally. The result is a Pinot Noir that speaks clearly of place rather than winemaking technique.

Food & Serving
This mature Spätburgunder is an ideal companion to refined, earthy dishes: think roasted duck or goose, herb-crusted lamb, mushroom risotto, game birds, or truffled poultry. It also pairs beautifully with charcuterie, aged semi-hard cheeses, and simple dishes built around root vegetables and lentils. Serve slightly cool, at around 14–16°C (57–61°F), to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. Decanting for 30–45 minutes is recommended to let the wine open up fully and allow any initial bottle notes to dissipate, especially given its age.

Producer
Weingut Michael Teschke, based in Gau-Algesheim in Rheinhessen, earned a devoted following for its uncompromising vineyard work and characterful, terroir-driven wines. Teschke famously lived in close symbiosis with his old vines and the diverse flora and fauna that shared his natural, largely untouched vineyards. His belief that great wine is made in the vineyard—long before it ever sees a cellar—placed him firmly among Germany’s most respected artisanal growers. Although he sold his vineyards in 2021 due to the intense physical demands and economic pressures of such labor-intensive farming, the wines he left behind are considered cult bottlings, prized for their authenticity and their quiet, profound expression of Rheinhessen’s potential for world-class Spätburgunder.
