Description

Massolino Barolo Parussi 2022 is a classic, single-vineyard Barolo made entirely from Nebbiolo in Castiglione Falletto. It is the first Barolo produced by the Massolino family outside its historic home in Serralunga d’Alba, combining traditional winemaking with the distinctive character of the Parussi cru.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep garnet-red colour, with the evolving brick-red hues typical of Nebbiolo. Its aromatic profile is layered and expressive, revealing sweet spices, sandalwood, tobacco and leather, alongside the refined, lifted perfume associated with mature Barolo. On the palate, it is full-bodied and impressively structured, with concentrated fruit, firm tannins and a persistent, savoury finish. The tannins will soften and integrate with bottle age, allowing further nuances to emerge over time. With its balance and traditional structure, the wine has excellent ageing potential and should develop beautifully for more than a decade when properly stored.

Production
The grapes come from the Parussi vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, at approximately 300 metres above sea level, where south-eastern and south-western exposures encourage even ripening. The Guyot-trained vines grow in calcareous, clay and sandy soils, while the local microclimate helps maintain freshness and naturally limits yields. The Nebbiolo grapes are harvested by hand, generally in the second half of October, then fermented with an extended period of skin maceration lasting around 15–20 days. The wine is matured in large oak casks for approximately 30 months, allowing its tannins and powerful structure to harmonise without obscuring the vineyard character.

Food & Serving
A natural match for rich and slow-cooked dishes, Massolino Barolo Parussi pairs particularly well with braised beef, roasted or braised pork, game and traditional Piedmontese preparations. It also complements mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to breathe. Decanting for one to two hours is recommended when serving the wine young, while older bottles should be decanted carefully to separate any sediment.

Producer
Massolino is one of Piedmont’s historic family-run estates, with roots in Serralunga d’Alba and a long-standing commitment to traditional Barolo production. The winery is especially recognised for its expressive single-vineyard wines, including the renowned Vigna Rionda, and for combining extended ageing in large oak casks with a clear sense of place. Parussi represents an important chapter in the estate’s history as its first Barolo from outside Serralunga d’Alba, showcasing the distinctive calcareous and sandy terroir of Castiglione Falletto.
