Description

Massolino Barolo Parussi 2017 is a single-vineyard Barolo that marries power with precision, showcasing the distinct character of Castiglione Falletto within the broader Barolo landscape. Drawn from the renowned Parussi cru, it offers a more focused, finely etched expression compared to Massolino’s Serralunga-based wines, with red-fruited clarity and mineral tension at its core. The 2017 vintage was marked by frost and drought, yet this wine stands out for its poise and definition—reflected in its 96-point rating from Wine Enthusiast.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Barolo Parussi reveals a luminous garnet core fading to an elegant brick-tinged rim, typical of classic Nebbiolo. The nose is immediately expressive, with blue and purple flowers, crushed rose petals, and violets layered over ripe dark-skinned fruits. Aromas of Morello cherry, black raspberry, and wild strawberry mingle with cedar, forest floor, and a whisper of dried mint and licorice, all underpinned by cool, chalky mineral tones. On the palate, this Barolo is full-bodied yet remarkably refined, with a compact, focused structure that carries both richness and finesse. Juicy Morello cherry and crushed raspberry take the lead, framed by savory notes of licorice, subtle spice, and earthy underbrush. The tannins are firm but ultra-fine and enveloping, giving the wine grip without harshness, while vibrant acidity keeps the fruit lifted and precise. The finish is long, persistent, and mineral-driven, promising excellent aging potential; well-stored bottles should evolve beautifully over 12–20 years, gaining more truffle, tobacco, and leather complexity with time.

Production
Parussi is a prized cru in the commune of Castiglione Falletto, benefitting from a protected position in the heart of the Barolo appellation. Here, Nebbiolo vines grow on calcareous clay and limestone-rich soils that lend both structure and an unmistakable, cooling mineral edge to the wine. The 2017 season was challenging, with episodes of frost and summer heat, but the site’s advantageous exposure and well-drained soils allowed the fruit to ripen evenly while retaining freshness. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are used. Massolino vinifies their cru Barolos traditionally, with extended maceration on the skins to extract tannin, color, and aromatic complexity, followed by long aging in large oak casks (botti), allowing the terroir-driven character of Parussi to shine through without excessive oak influence.

Food & Serving
This Barolo’s combination of structure, depth, and fragrant red fruit makes it a superb partner for rich, savory dishes. Classic pairings include braised beef (brasato al Barolo), veal shank, slow-cooked lamb, and game birds, as well as truffle-infused dishes, mushroom risotto, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity without emphasizing alcohol or tannin. For current enjoyment, decanting for 1.5–2 hours is recommended to fully open the nose and soften the youthful structure; older bottles will need a shorter, gentle decant just to remove sediment.

Producer
Founded in 1896, Massolino is one of the great traditional estates of Serralunga d’Alba, and a benchmark name in Barolo. Over generations, the family has steadily expanded and refined its holdings, building a reputation for site-expressive Nebbiolo that respects local customs while pursuing ever-greater precision. While historically rooted in Serralunga’s powerful, ageworthy style, the acquisition and development of the Parussi vineyard in Castiglione Falletto has added a complementary, more red-fruited and finely etched dimension to the range. Massolino’s Barolos are regularly praised by international critics and collectors alike, and the Barolo Parussi has become one of the estate’s most sought-after crus, underscoring the winery’s importance within the Barolo region.
