Description

Massolino Barolo 2021 is a classic expression of Nebbiolo from the heart of Serralunga d’Alba, combining structure, purity and finesse in a way that few producers can match. This wine offers the depth and longevity Barolo is famous for, yet with the approachability and precision that define the new generation of Piedmont. It’s a benchmark bottle for anyone looking to experience authentic, traditionally made Barolo from one of the region’s most respected estates.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Massolino Barolo 2021 shows a bright garnet hue with the characteristic pale rim of Nebbiolo, hinting at both its aromatic intensity and long life ahead. The nose opens slowly, revealing layers of rose petals, dried violets and red cherries, followed by hints of blood orange, anise, sweet spices and a subtle earthy, tar-like note that’s quintessential Barolo. On the palate, this is taut and focused, with fine, incisive tannins wrapped around flavors of sour cherry, wild strawberry, pomegranate and cranberry. Secondary notes of licorice, tobacco leaf, dried herbs and a mineral, almost ferrous edge reflect its Serralunga origins. The acidity is vibrant and mouthwatering, giving the wine a sense of energy and lift. While already enjoyable with air, the 2021 clearly has the structure to age gracefully for 12–20 years, gradually developing more truffle, leather and forest-floor complexity over time.

Production
Massolino’s Barolo 2021 is sourced from estate vineyards in and around Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most prized communes, known for its marl and limestone-rich soils that yield wines of power, structure and minerality. The Nebbiolo grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure careful selection in the vineyard, with sorting continuing at the winery to keep only the healthiest bunches. Fermentation traditionally takes place in temperature-controlled conditions with extended maceration to gently extract color, tannin and aromatics. The wine is then aged in large Slavonian oak casks, a hallmark of Massolino’s classic style, allowing the Nebbiolo character and terroir to shine without heavy oak imprint before bottling and further rest in bottle prior to release.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a superb partner for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, osso buco, lamb shanks or slow-cooked ragù over tagliatelle. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle dishes, mushroom risotto and aged firm cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C; in its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours helps the wine open up and soften the tannins, while older bottles should be handled gently and decanted briefly only if needed to remove sediment.

Producer
The Massolino estate, based in Serralunga d’Alba, was founded in 1896 and has grown into one of Barolo’s most admired traditional producers. With deep roots in the region and a particular reputation for their Vigna Rionda cru, the Massolino family has long championed an authentic, terroir-driven style that respects both Nebbiolo and the unique soils of Serralunga. Over the decades, their Barolos have become reference points for collectors and sommeliers alike, consistently earning critical acclaim for their combination of structure, elegance and aging potential, and helping to cement Serralunga’s status as one of Barolo’s great villages.
