Mas Doix Salanques 2021 is a beautifully balanced Priorat red that brings together intensity, elegance, and immediate drinkability. Made from old-vine Garnacha, Carignan, and a touch of Syrah, it captures the rugged energy of Catalonia’s steep llicorella slopes while remaining remarkably polished and approachable. This is a wine that reflects the soul of Priorat—historically one of Spain’s most distinctive regions—through a more focused and inviting lens.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Salanques 2021 shows a deep, concentrated colour, hinting at its richness and structure. The nose is layered and expressive, with dark berries, violets, dried rosemary, warm slate, and subtle notes of spice and toasted oak. On the palate, it is dense yet silky, with flavours of ripe blackberry, sour cherry, liquorice, cocoa, and a touch of lightly toasted wood. The tannins are ripe and finely polished, while the vibrant acidity keeps the wine lifted and precise. This is a vintage with a cooler, more linear profile than previous years, giving it excellent balance and a strong ageing potential over the next 8–12 years, possibly longer with ideal storage.

Production
Salanques comes from old vines, some up to 70 years of age, rooted in Priorat’s classic llicorella slate soils, which contribute to the wine’s mineral tension and distinctive freshness. The grapes are harvested by hand and vinified separately, allowing each variety to retain its character before blending. Fermentation is gentle and temperature-controlled, with moderate extraction to preserve finesse rather than sheer power. The wine is then matured for 14 months in French oak barrels, mostly used, adding structure and complexity without overshadowing the fruit.

Food & Serving
Salanques 2021 pairs wonderfully with grilled lamb, roasted game, beef stew, Iberian pork, or rich dishes with herbs and earthy flavours. It also works well with mature hard cheeses and mushroom-based cuisine. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to fully open and show its layered aromas and texture.
