Description

Marchesi Antinori Tignanello 2023 is a benchmark Tuscan red and one of Italy’s original Super Tuscans. Built around Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, it combines the savoury character of Chianti Classico with polished international structure. First released in the 1970s, Tignanello helped redefine the potential of Tuscan wine through its use of small oak barrels and a modern approach to blending.

Tasting Notes
The 2023 vintage pours a saturated, youthful red-purple colour. Its expressive nose reveals black cherry liqueur, fresh blackberry, lavender, woodland herbs, polished cedar and a subtle note of freshly turned earth. On the palate, it is full-bodied and generous, with soft, inviting fruit balanced by a vibrant core of acidity. Refined, even tannins provide shape without heaviness, while the Cabernet Franc adds lift and verticality to the Sangiovese-led blend. Long, seamless and luxurious, the finish combines freshness, precision and impressive length. Although already approachable thanks to its supple fruit, the wine has the structure to develop gracefully for decades. Best enjoyed from around 2027, with an anticipated drinking window extending to approximately 2057 when properly stored.

Production
Tignanello is produced from the estate’s high-altitude vineyards in the Chianti Classico area of Tuscany, where limestone-rich soils and the region’s varied marl and schist contribute freshness, aromatic complexity and structure. The blend is composed of approximately 80% Sangiovese, with Cabernet Sauvignon and an increasing proportion of Cabernet Franc. Grapes are carefully selected at harvest before fermentation and maturation in small oak barrels, a defining feature of Tignanello’s style that helps integrate the wine’s fruit, spice and tannic framework.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come to temperature gradually. Decant for around one to two hours when drinking young, both to open the wine’s layered aromas and to soften its youthful structure; older bottles should be decanted carefully and briefly, if at all. Its combination of ripe fruit, acidity and polished tannins makes it an excellent partner for Tuscan roast meats, beef, venison, lamb, wild boar ragù, grilled mushrooms and mature hard cheeses.

Producer
Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s most influential wine families, with a winemaking history spanning more than six centuries. The family’s willingness to challenge tradition led to the creation of Tignanello, among the first important Tuscan wines to blend Sangiovese with international varieties and mature the wine in small oak. Produced at the Tignanello estate in the heart of Tuscany, it remains one of the region’s most recognised and collectable wines, admired for its consistency, ageing ability and role in shaping the modern Super Tuscan category.
