Description

Maison du Vigneron Côtes du Jura Chardonnay Vieilles Vignes 2021 is a characterful white wine from one of France’s most distinctive regions. Crafted from old Chardonnay vines, it captures the tension between freshness and depth that makes Jura whites so compelling. This cuvée showcases the region’s unique limestone-rich terroir while offering a more accessible, fruit-forward style than the area’s famously oxidative wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chardonnay shows a bright straw-yellow color with pale golden reflections. The nose is expressive yet refined, offering notes of crisp green apple, pear, lemon zest and white flowers, layered with hints of hazelnut, fresh cream and a subtle mineral edge. On the palate, the wine is dry, medium-bodied and precise, with lively acidity that keeps it energetic from start to finish. Flavors of orchard fruits, citrus and a touch of stone fruit are supported by gentle oak nuance, giving a faintly toasty, nutty complexity without overwhelming the fruit. A pronounced saline-mineral backbone and good concentration from the old vines lead to a long, clean and slightly smoky finish. Enjoyable now for its vibrancy, it also has the structure to develop additional complexity over the next 4–7 years, gaining more nuttiness and honeyed tones with time in bottle.

Production
The Chardonnay grapes for this cuvée come from older vines rooted in the classic marl and limestone soils of the Côtes du Jura, a cool continental area that preserves acidity and highlights mineral character. Vineyard work typically emphasizes careful canopy management and controlled yields to maximize concentration in the old vines’ naturally smaller berries. Harvest is usually carried out by hand to ensure selective picking and intact fruit. In the cellar, the wine is vinified in a traditional manner: gentle pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation, and maturation on fine lees in a mix of stainless steel and neutral or lightly toasted oak, creating a style that emphasizes purity of fruit and terroir over heavy wood influence or strongly oxidative ageing.

Food & Serving
This Côtes du Jura Chardonnay is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with roasted chicken, veal in cream sauce, seared scallops, grilled white fish, or freshwater fish dishes. It also works wonderfully with Comté and other semi-hard alpine cheeses, mushroom-based dishes, and creamy risottos. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatics; a slightly warmer temperature will bring out more nuttiness and texture. Decanting for 20–30 minutes is optional but can help the wine open up aromatically, especially in its youth.

Producer
Maison du Vigneron is a long-established producer in the Jura, known for championing the region’s traditional varieties and distinctive styles while crafting wines that are accessible to a broad audience. Drawing on a network of local growers and carefully selected vineyard sites, the estate has played a role in bringing Jura wines to greater international attention. With a focus on expressing terroir through clean, precise winemaking, Maison du Vigneron offers a reliable gateway into the character of Côtes du Jura, from fresh, fruit-driven whites like this Chardonnay to more classic, ageworthy bottlings.
