Description
Maçanita A Laranja do Norte is one of the most distinctive orange wines from the Douro, showing how expressive the region can be when old traditions meet a fresh, high-altitude approach. Made by siblings António and Joana Maçanita, it reflects a clear focus on cool-climate elegance, native grapes, and minimal intervention.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it pours a deep golden color that immediately signals its skin-contact style. The nose is aromatic and layered, with notes of orange peel, white flowers, honey cake, ripe pear, and dried herbs.
On the palate, the wine is intense yet refined, with vibrant acidity, a firm mineral backbone, and a subtle tannic grip that gives it classic orange-wine structure. The finish is dry, fresh, and lightly textured, with enough energy to suggest several years of graceful development ahead.
Production
The grapes come from high-altitude vineyards in Baixo Corgo, planted at around 540–700 meters, where the cooler northern Portuguese climate helps preserve freshness and aromatic precision. The fruit is gently handled, left in contact with the skins for 3–4 days before pressing, then spontaneously fermented and aged for 18 months in stainless steel, with no oak influence.
Food & Serving
This is a highly gastronomic wine that works beautifully with white meats, creamy dishes, mushrooms, Asian cuisine, shellfish, tapas, and aged cheeses. Serve chilled at 10–12°C to highlight its citrus-driven freshness and lively structure; decanting is optional, but a short aeration can help open up the aromatics.
Producer
Maçanita is the project of António and Joana Maçanita, a brother-and-sister winemaking team known for championing the Douro’s altitude, native varieties, and more precise, terroir-driven expressions. Their work has helped bring renewed attention to the region’s cooler sites and lesser-seen styles, particularly through wines that combine authenticity, freshness, and individuality.
