Description
Luis Seabra Vinhos Indie Xisto Tinto 2021 is a distinctive Douro red made from an old, field-blended vineyard at high altitude in Alijó. Combining indigenous varieties including Rufete, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, it offers a more elegant, mineral expression of the Douro than the region’s traditionally powerful reds. The wine reflects Luis Seabra’s focus on site, old vines and minimal-intervention winemaking.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, the 2021 Indie Xisto Tinto opens with fragrant aromas of ripe red and dark berries, floral nuances and subtle earthy, spicy notes. Its high-altitude origin brings freshness and a clear mineral character, while the old mixed planting contributes complexity and depth.
On the palate, the wine is lively and finely structured, combining supple fruit with savoury notes, refreshing acidity and gently grained tannins. The 18 months of maturation in large wooden casks add integration and texture without overpowering the character of the fruit. It is enjoyable now for its energy and balance, but should gain further savoury complexity over the medium term with careful cellaring.
Production
The grapes come from a single vineyard in the municipality of Alijó, in the Cima Corgo subregion of the Douro, planted around 70 years ago on clay and blue schist at approximately 580 metres above sea level. The vineyard is a traditional field blend of indigenous red varieties, harvested by hand. Whole bunches are foot-trodden in a traditional lagar made from stainless steel, followed by spontaneous fermentation and ten days of maceration on the skins. The wine then matures for 18 months in large wooden casks of 500 and 2,500 litres.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly cool, at around 16–18°C, to highlight the wine’s freshness and mineral character. It pairs well with roast poultry, grilled pork, lamb, mushroom dishes, rustic sausages and hearty vegetable stews. Decanting is not essential, but 30–60 minutes in a decanter can help the wine open and reveal additional aromatic detail, particularly when served young.
Producer
Luis Seabra Vinhos is the personal project of Portuguese winemaker Luis Seabra, who established his own estate after gaining recognition for his work with low-intervention, terroir-driven Douro wines. Based in the Douro, he places particular emphasis on old vineyards, native varieties, high-altitude sites and restrained cellar work. His wines are valued for expressing the region with freshness, texture and individuality rather than relying solely on concentration and oak.
