Description
Lopez de Heredia Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva 2004 is a benchmark Rioja for drinkers who love classical, long‑aged reds with real soul. Drawn from the estate’s legendary Viña Tondonia vineyard and matured for well over a decade before release, this is a wine that keeps unfolding in the glass, revealing new layers with every swirl and sip. The outstanding 2004 vintage delivered textbook conditions, allowing the estate to craft a Gran Reserva of remarkable finesse, complexity, and longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2004 Tondonia Gran Reserva shows a beautiful, evolved ruby core shading into brick and garnet at the rim, a hallmark of traditionally aged Rioja. The nose is slow to open, but once it does, it is captivating: floral notes and delicate perfume mingle with forest floor, truffle, wild herbs, sweet spices, dried cherry, and a subtle earthy mushroom tone, along with a faint, intriguing hint of iodine.
On the palate, this wine is all about refinement and detail rather than sheer power. Medium-bodied yet intense, it glides with a velvety texture, super‑fine tannins and a supple, silky finish. Flavors echo the nose—red berries, dried fruits, savory herbs, spice, and undergrowth—layered with a lifted, almost ethereal energy. The balance of acidity, fruit, and tertiary complexity suggests tremendous aging potential; properly stored, this 2004 will continue to evolve gracefully for many years, and it is only just entering its long plateau of maturity.
Production
The grapes for this Gran Reserva come from the historic Viña Tondonia vineyard, a prime site on the banks of the Ebro River in Rioja Alta, with poor, stony, limestone‑rich soils that naturally limit yields and enhance complexity. The blend is classic Tondonia—predominantly Tempranillo with Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo—harvested by hand in October, at optimal maturity, in line with the estate’s traditional, low‑intervention philosophy. Fermentation takes place in large, old wooden vats with extended maceration, followed by a very long aging period in well‑seasoned American oak barrels. The 2004 was then held in bottle for additional years of refinement, with final bottling in November 2018, resulting in a wine that is fully integrated, harmonized, and ready for extended cellaring.
Food & Serving
This is a contemplative, gastronomic wine that shines alongside richly flavored, savory dishes. Think slow‑roasted lamb, game birds, braised beef, venison, mushroom risottos, truffle dishes, aged Manchego or other firm sheep’s cheeses, and hearty stews with wild herbs. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. Decant gently for 1–2 hours before serving to allow the wine to unfurl and shed any remaining bottle reduction, but avoid overly vigorous handling to preserve its delicate, evolved nuances.
Producer
Lopez de Heredia, founded in 1877 in Haro, is one of Rioja’s oldest and most revered bodegas, and a standard‑bearer for traditional, long‑aging Rioja wines. Still family‑owned and fiercely independent, the estate is renowned for its unwavering commitment to time‑honored methods: own‑vineyard fruit, fermentation in old wooden vats, extended barrel aging, and late release only when the wines are deemed ready. Viña Tondonia is their flagship vineyard and one of the most iconic sites in Rioja, and the Gran Reserva bottlings from this plot are sought after worldwide for their elegance, longevity, and authenticity. Over the decades, Lopez de Heredia has become synonymous with classic Rioja Alta, regularly earning critical acclaim and cult status among serious collectors and sommeliers alike.
