Description
Lingua Franca’s 2021 Estate Chardonnay is a terroir-driven expression of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, made from estate-grown Chardonnay and shaped by some of the region’s most meticulous farming. Founded by Master Sommelier Larry Stone, the estate has become known for its obsession with site, light, and precision—qualities that give this wine its distinctive sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a beautiful straw-yellow color with a faint green hue. The nose opens with layered aromas of citrus, mineral notes, yellow apple, and a subtle whisper of camphor, all framed by a polished, understated oak influence.
The palate is rounded and generous at first, yet lifted by the cool-climate freshness that defines great Willamette Valley Chardonnay. Fruit and minerality are beautifully balanced, and the texture is refined rather than heavy. With its concentration and structure, this wine should age gracefully over the next several years.
Production
The grapes come from Lingua Franca’s own vineyards in the Willamette Valley, where east-facing slopes, cool temperatures, and a long growing season help preserve freshness and aromatic complexity. The wine is made from the CH548 Chardonnay clone, known for producing small yields of highly concentrated fruit. Vinification is handled with a light touch, including only 21% new oak in a mix of 500-liter and 225-liter barrels, so the fruit and terroir remain front and center.
Food & Serving
This Chardonnay is a natural match for roast chicken, lobster, seared scallops, creamy pasta dishes, and mushroom-based cuisine. Serve it slightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and decanting is not necessary, though a short time in the glass will help it open beautifully.
Producer
Lingua Franca was founded by Larry Stone, one of the world’s most respected Master Sommeliers, with a vision to create wines that speak clearly of site and climate. Working with winemaker Thomas Savre, who trained in Burgundy, the estate has quickly gained recognition as one of Oregon’s most compelling Chardonnay producers, celebrated for its precision, elegance, and deep connection to terroir.
