Leoville Barton 2ème Grand Cru Classé Saint-Julien, 2000

Léoville Barton 2000 is a classic Saint-Julien Bordeaux from the estate’s Second Growth vineyard, combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the elegance and balance for which the appellation is renowned. The château has been owned by the Irish Barton family since 1826 and remains one of the Médoc’s most respected traditional producers.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby to garnet in colour, with the brick-red rim that comes with bottle age. The bouquet reveals mature blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite and dried herbs, complemented by subtle earthy and cigar-box nuances. On the palate, it is structured yet refined, offering layers of cassis, dark plum and spice supported by polished tannins and fresh acidity. The finish is long, savoury and mineral, with the complexity expected from a well-kept 2000 Bordeaux. This is a mature wine that should be enjoyed now, although well-stored bottles may continue to develop over the next several years.

Production
The vineyards of Léoville Barton lie on the gravel-rich soils of Saint-Julien, where excellent drainage and the moderating influence of the Gironde help Cabernet Sauvignon reach full ripeness while retaining freshness. The blend is traditionally Cabernet Sauvignon-led, supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Grapes are carefully selected and traditionally vinified before maturation in French oak, allowing the wine to develop its structure, aromatic depth and distinctive cedar and graphite character.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to settle upright. A careful decant of around 30–60 minutes can help open the wine and separate it from any mature sediment, though older bottles should be monitored rather than left exposed to air for too long. Its savoury structure pairs beautifully with roast beef, lamb, venison, duck, braised short ribs and mature hard cheeses.

Château Léoville Barton traces its history in Bordeaux to Hugh Barton, who acquired the estate in 1826. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification, it is particularly admired for producing age-worthy Saint-Julien wines with a classic, Cabernet-driven profile. The estate remains in the Barton family and is known for its consistent quality, traditional style and ability to express the gravelly terroir of the Médoc.
