Description

Léoville Barton 2022 is a poised, classically styled Saint-Julien that marries depth and concentration with remarkable freshness. This is a deeply refined left-bank Bordeaux, offering all the cassis-rich charm you’d expect from a great Cabernet-based wine, but with a new level of precision and purity. It marks a milestone for the estate as the very first vintage crafted in Léoville Barton’s state-of-the-art winery, allowing unprecedented parcel-by-parcel vinification.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Léoville Barton 2022 shows a dense, opaque ruby-purple hue, hinting at both its intensity and youthful energy. The nose is immediately expressive, layering ripe blackcurrant and blackberry with notes of graphite and pencil shavings, intertwined with ink, cigar box, and subtle, well-integrated spicy oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, silky and velvety in texture, with a tight, concentrated core of dark fruit framed by fine, ripe tannins. Flavors of cassis, black cherry and plum are lifted by hints of cedar, tobacco leaf, and warm spice, leading into a long, focused finish with impressive persistence and a vibrant, energetic backbone. Though already seductive in its youth, this 2022 has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 15–25 years or more, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances over time.

Production
Léoville Barton 2022 hails from the gravelly, well-drained soils of Saint-Julien in the Médoc, an area renowned for producing Cabernet Sauvignon of remarkable finesse and longevity. The vineyard—planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and small amounts of other Bordeaux varieties—is farmed with meticulous attention to detail, with careful plot selection and hand harvesting at optimal ripeness. In 2022, for the first time, the fruit was brought into the château’s completely new winery, where more than double the number of fermentation vessels allowed for precise, parcel-by-parcel vinification. This enhanced control over extraction, temperature, and maceration has yielded a wine of heightened purity, definition, and textural refinement, before being matured in French oak to harmonize the structure and build complexity.

Food & Serving
This Saint-Julien is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes such as roasted lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, venison, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes, roasted root vegetables, wild mushrooms, and hard or semi-hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatics and texture. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet, while mature bottles should be decanted gently just before serving to remove sediment.

Producer
Château Léoville Barton is one of the most respected Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) estates of the 1855 Classification, and a benchmark name in Saint-Julien. Owned by the Barton family since the early 19th century, it has long been celebrated for producing classically structured, ageworthy wines that embody the elegance and balance of the Médoc. The estate plays a crucial role in maintaining the region’s reputation for quality and tradition, while recent investments—most notably the new, cutting-edge winery debuted with the 2022 vintage—signal a forward-looking approach. Consistently lauded by critics and collectors alike, Léoville Barton stands as a reference point for serious Bordeaux enthusiasts around the world.
