The nose is immediately expressive, layering ripe blackcurrant and blackberry with notes of graphite and pencil shavings, intertwined with ink, cigar box, and subtle, well-integrated spicy oak. Léoville Barton 2022 hails from the gravelly, well-drained soils of Saint-Julien in the Médoc, an area renowned for producing Cabernet Sauvignon of remarkable finesse and longevity. The vineyard—planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and small amounts of other Bordeaux varieties—is farmed with meticulous attention to detail, with careful plot selection and hand harvesting at optimal ripeness. In 2022, for the first time, the fruit was brought into the château’s completely new winery, where more than double the number of fermentation vessels allowed for precise, parcel-by-parcel vinification. This enhanced control over extraction, temperature, and maceration has yielded a wine of heightened purity, definition, and textural refinement, before being matured in French oak to harmonize the structure and build complexity.
