Description
Le Mortelle Poggio alle Nane 2023 is a refined Tuscan red that expresses the coastal elegance of Maremma through a Bordeaux-inspired blend. Crafted from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère, it combines Mediterranean warmth with remarkable freshness and structure. As part of the Antinori family’s Le Mortelle estate, this cuvée reflects both centuries of Tuscan know‑how and a contemporary, terroir‑driven approach to fine wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Poggio alle Nane 2023 typically shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with youthful violet reflections, signalling both intensity and energy. The nose opens with dark berries—blackcurrant, blackberry and ripe plum—layered with notes of Mediterranean herbs, graphite, and subtle spice. Hints of cocoa, tobacco leaf and a gentle leafy nuance from the Cabernet Franc add complexity and lift.
On the palate, this wine is full‑bodied yet poised, with a core of ripe black fruit supported by fresh acidity and finely grained tannins. The Carménère brings a touch of dark spice, pepper and savory edges, while Cabernet Sauvignon supplies structure and length. The finish is long and persistent, framed by notes of cassis, dried herbs and delicate oak. Enjoyable in its youth for its vibrancy and purity of fruit, the 2023 vintage has the structure to improve gracefully over the next 8–12 years under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
Poggio alle Nane is sourced from carefully selected parcels on the Le Mortelle estate in coastal Tuscany, where vines grow on well‑drained sandy and loamy soils enriched with clay and minerals, and benefit from the moderating influence of sea breezes and strong diurnal temperature swings. Grapes are usually harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the best clusters are used. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled vessels, with gentle extraction to preserve aromatic precision and tannin finesse, followed by maturation in small oak barrels to integrate structure, enhance complexity and respect the character of each variety before blending.
Food & Serving
Le Mortelle Poggio alle Nane 2023 pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, Tuscan-style bistecca alla Fiorentina, lamb chops with rosemary, game birds, and rich ragù pastas. It also works well with aged cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano Reggiano and hard cow’s milk cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux stems to allow the aromas to open up. For young vintages like 2023, decanting for about an hour before serving can help soften the tannins and reveal greater aromatic complexity.
Producer
Le Mortelle is a coastal Tuscan estate owned by the historic Antinori family, whose winemaking roots in Italy date back over six centuries. Situated near Castiglione della Pescaia in Maremma, Le Mortelle was developed as a dedicated project to showcase the potential of this once‑wild coastal zone for producing world‑class wines from international and local varieties. Under the Antinori banner—one of Italy’s most influential fine‑wine producers—Le Mortelle has quickly earned recognition for its precise, terroir‑driven reds and thoughtful, sustainable viticulture, reinforcing Maremma’s status as one of Tuscany’s most dynamic modern wine regions.
