Description
Lanson Champagne Le Black Création 258 Brut is a refined, non-vintage Champagne that artfully balances power and elegance, staying true to the house’s signature fresh, vibrant style. Crafted from a meticulous blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier sourced from select crus, it offers a complex yet accessible expression of the Lanson character. The Création series is numbered to mark the years since Lanson’s first harvest in 1760, linking each cuvée to more than two and a half centuries of Champagne heritage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Le Black Création 258 shows a bright, pale golden color with a fine, persistent mousse that speaks to its quality and careful aging. The nose opens with delicate spring-like aromas—white flowers, fresh-cut orchard fruits, and citrus zest—layered with subtle brioche and almond notes that come from extended time on the lees. A gentle thread of green apple and pear runs through the bouquet, giving it a lifted, refreshing character.
On the palate, this Champagne is precise and energetic, yet rounded by beautifully integrated texture. The 50% Pinot Noir brings structure and red-fruited depth, the 35% Chardonnay adds finesse, minerality, and tension, while the 15% Pinot Meunier contributes suppleness and a touch of ripe stone fruit. Expect flavors of crisp apple, lemon zest, white peach, and a hint of toasted hazelnut, all carried by a lively, chalk-tinged acidity and a clean, lingering finish. With a minimum of three years of maturation in the cellar and additional aging after disgorgement, this cuvée is drinking wonderfully now but will hold and gain further nuance over the next 3–5 years.
Production
Le Black Création 258 is sourced from a selection of crus across the Champagne region of France, showcasing the diversity of terroirs that Lanson has long championed. The blend is approximately 50% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, and 15% Pinot Meunier, carefully assembled by the Chef de Caves from numerous villages and reserve wines. Grapes are harvested by hand, as is traditional in Champagne, to preserve fruit integrity. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to maintain purity and freshness, with Lanson’s hallmark practice of avoiding malolactic fermentation to retain a vibrant acidity. The wine is then aged for at least three years in the cool, chalky cellars, followed by a minimum of six months’ rest after disgorgement, allowing the flavors to knit together and the mousse to refine.
Food & Serving
Lanson Le Black Création 258 Brut is a versatile Champagne that shines both as an apéritif and at the table. Pair it with freshly shucked oysters, shrimp cocktail, sushi, or delicate white fish to highlight its mineral backbone and citrus-driven freshness. It also complements light poultry dishes, creamy cheeses, and canapés featuring smoked salmon or caviar. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to showcase its precision and aromatic lift. Decanting is not necessary, but pouring it into generously shaped white wine or tulip-shaped Champagne glasses will help the aromas fully open.
Producer
Founded in 1760 in Reims, Lanson is one of Champagne’s oldest houses and has long been recognized for its distinctive, fresh style and its deep roots in the region. Over the centuries, the house has built strong relationships with growers across many of Champagne’s most prized crus, enabling a complex and consistent house blend year after year. Lanson is particularly known for its decision to block malolactic fermentation, a choice that underpins the vibrant, age-worthy character of its wines. With a history of royal warrants, international recognition, and a loyal following among Champagne enthusiasts, Lanson remains a benchmark producer and an important ambassador for the Champagne region worldwide.
