Description
Château Lagrange’s 2014 Saint-Julien is a classic Left Bank Bordeaux from one of the Médoc’s most respected Third Growth estates. Known for its precision, structure, and polished Cabernet-led style, it offers the pedigree of a historic classified growth with the elegance and balance that make Saint-Julien so admired.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep garnet colour with a refined, youthful edge that is beginning to soften beautifully with age. The nose is lifted and composed, revealing blackcurrant, plum, cedar, graphite, violets, and a subtle touch of tobacco and spice.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with firm but well-integrated tannins, fresh acidity, and a savoury mineral core. The fruit is precise rather than showy, with layers of dark berries, cassis, cedarwood, and earthy notes that unfold gradually. This is a wine built for graceful development and should continue to improve over the next several years, with the best drinking window likely still ahead.
Production
Château Lagrange sits on classic Saint-Julien gravel soils, where excellent drainage and the maritime influence of Bordeaux help Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot ripen slowly and evenly. The estate’s vineyards are carefully managed to preserve concentration and freshness, and the grapes are typically harvested by parcel at optimal ripeness before undergoing traditional vinification with temperature-controlled fermentation and oak maturation to enhance structure and complexity.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game, and mushroom-based dishes, as well as hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking now, especially to allow the wine’s aromas and texture to open fully.
Producer
Château Lagrange is one of Saint-Julien’s historic estates and was classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Over the years, it has earned a strong reputation for producing reliably elegant and ageworthy wines that reflect the hallmark balance of the appellation. Its standing in the region is built on consistency, precision, and a style that combines classic Bordeaux structure with a polished, modern finish.
