Description

La Turque 2003 from E. Guigal is one of Côte-Rôtie’s most sought-after wines, known for its depth, precision, and remarkable complexity. This iconic Rhône red combines Syrah with a touch of Viognier, a signature blend that gives the wine both power and elegance, and has helped define Guigal’s reputation on the steep granite-and-schist slopes of the region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep, concentrated garnet color with mature edges reflecting its age. The bouquet is layered and expressive, often unfolding with black fruits, violets, smoked meat, licorice, truffle, and spice, with the Viognier contributing a subtle floral lift. On the palate, La Turque is famously dense yet refined, with velvety tannins, ripe dark berry fruit, savory mineral notes, and a long, structured finish. The 2003 vintage has the concentration and warmth to drink beautifully now, though well-stored bottles can continue to evolve gracefully for years, gaining more earth, leather, and tertiary nuance.

Production
La Turque comes from a prized single vineyard in Côte-Rôtie, where very steep terraces of schist and other rocky soils create ideal conditions for low-yield, high-concentration fruit. The site benefits from excellent sun exposure, helping Syrah reach full ripeness while preserving the region’s signature freshness and minerality. Harvesting is typically done by hand due to the extreme slopes, and vinification follows E. Guigal’s meticulous, traditional approach with extended aging in small oak barrels to build texture, depth, and longevity.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for richly flavored dishes such as roasted lamb, venison, duck breast, beef tenderloin, or game with herb and pepper seasoning. It also pairs well with mature hard cheeses and earthy preparations like mushrooms or truffled dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least an hour, especially if the bottle has been stored for a long time, to allow the aromas to open fully.

Producer
E. Guigal is one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected producers, founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal in Ampuis, the heart of Côte-Rôtie. The family estate has become synonymous with some of the region’s greatest wines, especially its celebrated single-vineyard cuvées such as La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque. Under successive generations, Guigal has built a reputation for uncompromising quality, aging potential, and a defining role in elevating the stature of Northern Rhône wines worldwide.
