Description

La Turque 1988 from E. Guigal is one of Côte-Rôtie’s most coveted wines, combining the power of Syrah with a rare touch of Viognier for added perfume and elegance. As part of Guigal’s iconic single-vineyard “LaLa” trio, it has earned a reputation as a benchmark for long-lived, highly expressive Rhône reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep garnet to brick-tinged color, reflecting its age while retaining notable concentration. The nose can be remarkably layered, with aromas of black fruits, dried blackberry, violet, smoked meat, leather, black olive, and pepper, alongside more evolved notes of truffle, cedar, and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is known for its dense yet polished structure, combining savory depth with fine-grained tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish. At this age it is likely entering a mature, complex phase, though well-stored bottles may still offer further drinking pleasure over the coming years.

Production
La Turque comes from a steep Côte-Rôtie site in the northern Rhône, where sun exposure, schist-rich soils, and a dramatic hillside terroir help create intensely flavored, elegant wines. E. Guigal is known for meticulous vineyard work and careful selection, with traditional harvesting and highly controlled vinification designed to preserve purity, structure, and aromatic complexity.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, venison, duck breast, braised short ribs, or wild mushrooms. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant gently if needed; for an older vintage like 1988, a short decant or careful double-checking before serving is usually best to avoid losing delicate aromas.

Producer
E. Guigal is one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected producers, founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal and later elevated by the work of his son Marcel. The estate is especially renowned for its exceptional Côte-Rôtie bottlings, including La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque, which have helped define the region’s modern prestige and earned worldwide acclaim.
