Description
La Mouline is one of the legendary single-vineyard wines of Côte-Rôtie, crafted by E. Guigal from one of the Rhône Valley’s most celebrated sites. Known for its remarkable finesse, depth, and ageing capacity, it stands as a benchmark for world-class Syrah from northern Rhône.
Tasting Notes
La Mouline typically shows a deep, polished ruby color with exceptional brightness. The bouquet is highly expressive, often unfolding with violets, blackberries, dark cherries, smoked meat, spice, and refined oak notes.
On the palate, it is layered and remarkably silky, combining ripe dark fruit with floral lift, pepper, minerality, and a long, elegant finish. While already impressive in youth, it has the structure and concentration to evolve beautifully for decades, gaining complexity, savoury depth, and a more nuanced texture over time.
Production
La Mouline comes from a prized Côte-Rôtie hillside site in the northern Rhône, where steep terraced vineyards and a mix of schistous soils create ideal conditions for Syrah, often with a touch of Viognier in the blend. The grapes are carefully hand-harvested and vinified with great precision to preserve purity, fragrance, and the wine’s signature silky texture, followed by maturation in oak to build structure and complexity.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with lamb, duck, game birds, venison, and richly flavored mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least one to two hours in its youth to allow the aromatics and structure to open fully.
Producer
E. Guigal is one of the most respected producers in the Rhône Valley, founded by Étienne Guigal in 1946 and later elevated by Marcel Guigal into an internationally renowned estate. The house is especially famous for its exceptional Côte-Rôtie wines, including its iconic single-vineyard bottlings, which have helped define the modern reputation of the region.
