Description
La Mouline 1995 is one of the most sought-after wines from E. Guigal, a legendary single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie known for its precision, depth, and remarkable longevity. Produced in tiny quantities and built from some of the finest hillside parcels in the Northern Rhône, it represents one of the great names in French wine history.
Tasting Notes
By now, the 1995 vintage typically shows a mature garnet to brick-red hue with the elegance and complexity that come with age. The nose is usually layered and expressive, with notes of black cherry, plum, violets, cured meat, smoky spice, leather, and hints of earth and cedar.
On the palate, La Mouline is famously silky and beautifully structured, balancing concentrated dark fruit with savory mineral tones, fine tannins, and a long, refined finish. This is a wine that can continue to evolve gracefully, though it is already at a stage where tertiary aromas and seamless texture are part of the appeal.
Production
La Mouline comes from a small, steep vineyard site in Côte-Rôtie, where schist-rich soils and excellent sun exposure help produce wines of exceptional ripeness and finesse. The fruit is typically harvested by hand due to the challenging slope, and fermentation is carried out with careful temperature control before maturation in new French oak, a hallmark of the Guigal style.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with rich, flavorful dishes such as roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, game birds, truffle dishes, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for about 1–2 hours to help the aromas fully open, especially if the bottle has been stored well and remains youthful in structure.
Producer
E. Guigal is one of the most respected producers in the Rhône Valley, founded in 1946 in Ampuis and built into an icon by Marcel Guigal and later his son Philippe. The estate is especially renowned for its Côte-Rôtie single-vineyard wines—La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque—which helped define the region’s global reputation for powerful yet elegant Syrah-based wines.
