Description

Krug Grande Cuvée 172ème Édition is the latest chapter in one of Champagne’s most iconic wines, a multi-vintage blend created to transcend the character of any single year. Based primarily on the 2016 harvest and composed of 11 different vintages dating back to 1998, this cuvée offers remarkable depth, detail and harmony. Crafted from a precise blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier, it encapsulates Krug’s historic vision of creating the fullest expression of Champagne every year, regardless of vintage conditions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Krug Grande Cuvée 172ème Édition shows a luminous golden hue with a fine, persistent mousse that hints at its concentration and long aging on lees. The nose is complex and inviting, interweaving white orchard fruits with beeswax, marzipan and toasted hazelnuts. Subtle notes of dried herbs, white flowers and gentle spice add layers of intrigue as the wine opens in the glass. On the palate, this Champagne is medium to full-bodied, combining power with refinement. The attack is delicately spicy before unfolding into an enveloping, multi-layered texture. A generous, almost fleshy core of ripe fruit is lifted by vibrant acidity and a distinct chalky, mineral freshness that drives the long, precise finish. Already beautifully expressive, this 172ème Édition has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully over the next 5–10 years, gaining further complexity with careful cellaring.

Production
Krug Grande Cuvée 172ème Édition is rooted in the chalky soils and cool climate of Champagne, where the region’s diverse crus allow Krug to draw from a wide palette of expressions. Based on the 2016 harvest, the blend is composed of approximately 44% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and the balance Pinot Meunier, enriched with reserve wines from a total of 11 vintages, the oldest from 1998. Grapes are hand-harvested and vinified separately by plot, with primary fermentation taking place in small oak casks, a traditional Krug hallmark that enhances texture and complexity without overt oakiness. After blending, the wine undergoes extended aging on its lees in bottle before disgorgement; this 172ème Édition was disgorged in the first quarter of 2023 with a carefully judged dosage of around 4.5 g/L, yielding a Champagne that is both precise and generous.

Food & Serving
This edition of Krug Grande Cuvée is exceptionally versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with refined dishes such as lobster, scallops, turbot, or sole in buttery or citrus-inflected sauces. It also complements roasted poultry, veal with morels, creamy risottos, aged Comté or nutty hard cheeses, and can elevate simple luxuries like jamón ibérico or lightly toasted brioche with mushrooms. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C, in a generous white-wine glass to let the aromas unfold fully. A short decant in the glass—simply giving it time to breathe and warm slightly—is often enough; opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving and revisiting it over the course of a meal will reveal its many layers.

Producer
Krug, founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, is one of Champagne’s most revered houses and a benchmark for prestige cuvées worldwide. From the outset, Joseph Krug’s philosophy was to create the most complete expression of Champagne every year, independent of vintage variation, a vision that lives on in each Édition of Grande Cuvée. The house is known for its meticulous attention to detail, vinifying individual plots separately and using oak for primary fermentation to preserve character and enhance complexity. Based in Reims and now part of the region’s elite, Krug has earned a reputation for producing long-lived, profoundly expressive Champagnes that are prized by collectors, sommeliers and enthusiasts across the globe.
