Description

K.F. Groebe Riesling Westhofener Alte Reben Aus Ersten Lagen 2023 is a finely crafted Riesling from some of Rheinhessen’s most renowned sites in Westhofen. Sourced from old vines in the VDP.Große Lagen Kirchspiel and Aulerde, it combines depth, elegance, and a touch of fine residual sweetness. The style is a deliberate nod to early 20th-century Rieslings, when perfectly balanced wines with a hint of sweetness and outstanding aging potential were the benchmark of quality.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling shows a bright, pale straw to light lemon color with green reflections, signaling its youth and vibrancy. The nose is seductive and finely etched, with aromas of ripe vineyard peach, yellow plum, and citrus zest, layered over notes of white flowers, crushed slate, and a faint herbal lift. A subtle hint of sweetness is already suggested on the bouquet, wrapped in a cool, stony minerality. On the palate, the wine is precise yet generous, with a juiciness that recalls ripe stone fruit, lime, and a touch of mirabelle, balanced by vivid acidity. The small amount of residual sugar is seamlessly integrated, adding charm, texture, and length rather than overt sweetness. A fine mineral backbone and a saline edge carry the flavors through a long, clean finish. While immensely enjoyable in its youth, the structure, acidity, and extract point clearly to excellent aging potential: expect increasing complexity and tertiary nuances such as honey, dried fruit, and smoky minerality over 8–15 years or more, depending on storage.

Production
The fruit for this wine comes from old Riesling vines rooted in the top sites of Westhofen—Kirchspiel and Aulerde—classified as VDP.Große Lagen. These vineyards benefit from a combination of limestone-rich and loess-clay soils, which lend both tension and depth, while the south and southeast exposures provide optimal ripening conditions and cool night-time temperatures to preserve acidity. Harvest is carried out selectively by hand, ensuring only perfectly ripe and healthy grapes are picked, often in multiple passes through the vineyard. In the cellar, Fritz Groebe follows a traditional, low-intervention approach: gentle pressing, careful settling of the must, and slow, temperature-controlled fermentation—often in stainless steel and/or large traditional casks—to capture purity of fruit and terroir character. The wine is left with a deliberate touch of residual sugar, in line with historical Rheinhessen Riesling styles, and spends time on the fine lees to build texture, polish, and aromatic complexity.

Food & Serving
This Riesling’s interplay of freshness, fruit, and subtle sweetness makes it a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with lightly spicy Asian dishes (such as Thai or Vietnamese cuisine), aromatic preparations of poultry, or dishes featuring peach, citrus, or fresh herbs. It is equally at home with classic German fare like roast pork with crackling, veal schnitzel, or a creamy poultry fricassee, and it complements soft-ripened cheeses and fresh goat’s cheese very well. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to unfold. Decanting is not strictly necessary for a young vintage, but a brief splash in a carafe or 15–20 minutes in the glass will help the wine open up and show additional layers.

Producer
Weingut K.F. Groebe is one of the historic estates of Rheinhessen, based in the village of Westhofen, long known for its outstanding limestone-rich vineyards. The Groebe family has been cultivating vines here for generations, and the estate is widely regarded as a benchmark producer for terroir-driven Rieslings from sites such as Kirchspiel and Aulerde. As a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), K.F. Groebe has played an important role in elevating the reputation of Rheinhessen from a bulk-wine region to one of Germany’s most exciting sources of premium wines. Under the guidance of Fritz Groebe, the winery is celebrated for its precise, long-lived Rieslings that combine classical structure, a clear sense of place, and a respect for traditional styles—qualities that are clearly expressed in the Alte Reben bottling.
