Description
K.F. Groebe Riesling Kirchspiel Grande Reserve 2016 is a rare Versteigerungswein (auction wine) that captures the classic nobility of German Riesling in a particularly refined, ageworthy form. Sourced from the famed Kirchspiel vineyard in Westhofen, this Grande Reserve is a meticulously crafted, long-matured bottling that sits at the very top of the estate’s range. It bridges past and present: inspired by the great, gently sweet, low-alcohol Rieslings that once graced imperial courts and luxury liners around 1900, yet made with today’s precision and purity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2016 Kirchspiel Grande Reserve shows a luminous, medium straw to pale gold hue, with the first hints of maturity just starting to glint at the rim. The nose is deeply expressive and layered: ripe citrus (lime, Meyer lemon) and orchard fruits (yellow apple, quince, white peach) intertwine with cool slate and limestone minerality, dried herbs, chamomile, honeycomb and a whisper of smoke. With air, more nuanced aromas emerge – candied citrus peel, white flowers and a subtle, fine petrol note that signals its growing complexity.
On the palate, the wine is crystalline and precise, with a vibrant but perfectly integrated acidity that carries the moderate alcohol and any residual sweetness in complete harmony. The texture is silky yet firmly structured, combining juiciness with a tensile, salty grip from the Kirchspiel’s limestone soils. Flavours of citrus zest, stone fruit and ripe pear are layered with wet stone, spice and a delicate, almost airy sweetness that recalls traditional, not fully dry Rheinhessen Rieslings of a century ago. The finish is long, resonant and mouth-watering, promising substantial aging potential. Properly stored, this 2016 has at least 10–20 years of evolution ahead, gaining further complexity, honeyed depth and tertiary nuances while retaining its core of freshness.
Production
Kirchspiel is one of Rheinhessen’s most celebrated Lagen, an east- to southeast-facing amphitheatre of vines above Westhofen, where limestone-rich soils, cool morning light and excellent drainage create Rieslings of tension, minerality and finesse. At Weingut K.F. Groebe, work in the vineyard is careful and low-intervention, with an emphasis on precise canopy management and selective hand-picking to handle the challenges of a demanding year like 2016, when early budbreak and prolonged rain increased disease pressure. Only perfectly healthy, ripe Riesling grapes from the Kirchspiel site are chosen for the Grande Reserve, often in multiple passes through the vineyard. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented slowly, typically with a measured approach to residual sugar that nods to historical styles, followed by extended maturation on the lees in traditional vessels. This prolonged élevage, combined with minimal intervention, polishes the wine’s texture, integrates its components and yields a naturally stable, ageworthy Riesling worthy of auction status.
Food & Serving
This Kirchspiel Grande Reserve 2016 is a versatile partner at the table, particularly suited to refined cuisine and dishes that benefit from both freshness and a touch of gentle richness in the wine. Think finely prepared seafood such as grilled or poached turbot, scallops, or lobster with beurre blanc, as well as sushi and sashimi. It also shines alongside classic German dishes like veal schnitzel, roast poultry, and dishes with light cream sauces, as well as spicy Asian cuisine where its vibrant acidity and subtle sweetness can balance heat – for example, Thai curries, Vietnamese dishes, or aromatic Chinese cuisine. Soft and semi-hard cheeses (Comté, aged Gouda, or mild blue cheeses) are excellent companions. Serve chilled but not too cold, ideally around 9–11 °C (48–52 °F), to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. Decanting for 30–60 minutes, especially in its youth or shortly after release, helps the wine open and reveal its full spectrum of aromas and textures.
