Description

Kaapzicht Skemerlig Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 is a refined, terroir-driven expression of Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, produced from a single vineyard on the estate’s cooler slopes. Bottelary Hills has long been recognised for producing Cabernet Sauvignon with both concentration and freshness, and this wine captures that balance with dark fruit, fine tannins and carefully integrated oak. The name Skemerlig, meaning “twilight”, reflects the distinctive character of this special vineyard within Kaapzicht’s Terroir Range.

Tasting Notes
Deep and richly coloured in the glass, the wine opens with an expressive nose of blackcurrants, dark berries, graphite and dried herbs. Subtle spicy and lightly toasted nuances from the oak add complexity without overshadowing the fruit. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, yet precise and elegant. Ripe dark fruit is supported by fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity, creating a firm, well-balanced structure and a long, savoury finish. Skemerlig offers an appealing middle ground between Kaapzicht’s approachable Family Range and the immense concentration of its Steytler Pentagon. It can be enjoyed now with decanting, but has the potential to develop further over approximately 7–10 years.

Production
The Cabernet Sauvignon vines were planted in 2001 on a cooler slope in the Bottelary Hills, where weathered granite soils and maritime air currents encourage a long, moderate ripening period. The grapes are hand-harvested, inoculated with a selected biodynamic yeast culture and fermented dry on their skins. After gentle pressing, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in tank before maturing for 18 months in oak barrels: 50% new, 25% one-year-old and 25% two-year-old. This combination contributes structure and complexity while preserving the wine’s dark-fruited Cabernet character.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after 30–60 minutes in a decanter when enjoyed young. Its structure and depth make it an excellent partner for grilled or roasted beef, lamb, venison and slow-cooked short ribs. It also pairs well with mushroom dishes, rich stews and mature hard cheeses.

Producer
Kaapzicht Estate is a family-owned winery in the Bottelary Hills north of Stellenbosch and has been in the Steytler family since 1946. Today, Danie Steytler and his son, Danie Steytler Jr., continue the family’s focus on expressive wines rooted in the estate’s granite-rich terroir. The name Kaapzicht translates roughly as “view over the Cape”, inspired by the property’s elevated position overlooking Cape Town and Table Mountain. The estate is particularly respected for Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-inspired blends, while its historic Chenin Blanc vineyard, planted in 1947, is among South Africa’s oldest surviving Chenin Blanc vineyards.
