Description

“Bambule” loosely translates to “ruckus” or “riot” – an apt name for this wild, unfiltered and unsulfured orange wine from Judith Beck. The Neuburger Bambule Bio 2019 takes a traditional, almost forgotten Austrian grape and propels it boldly into the present with extended skin contact and a hands-off, natural approach. This is a vivid, characterful Burgenland orange wine that celebrates both heritage and experimentation in the glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Judith Beck Neuburger Bambule Bio 2019 shows a deep amber to burnt orange hue, slightly hazy, signaling its unfiltered, minimal-intervention style. The nose is striking and complex, with generous notes of orange marmalade, sea buckthorn and dried mango, wrapped in a fragrant herbal veil of lemon balm and mint. On the palate, this wine is textural and energetic, with a firm grip from skin tannins balanced by vibrant acidity. Citrus tones – candied orange peel, grapefruit zest and a touch of bitter orange – mingle with ripe stone fruit and dried tropical fruit. A distinct mineral line runs through the wine, leading to a long, saline, almost sea-breeze finish. Drinking beautifully now for those who enjoy expressive, savory orange wines, it also has the structure and phenolic backbone to evolve interestingly over the next 3–5 years.

Production
Judith Beck’s estate vineyards in Burgenland benefit from the Pannonian climate: warm, sunny days moderated by cool nights, with gravelly and loamy soils that give both ripeness and freshness to Neuburger. The grapes for Bambule are farmed organically and biodynamically, then harvested by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit reaches the cellar. For this orange wine, the Neuburger is fermented on its skins with native yeasts, allowing an extended maceration that builds color, aroma intensity and tannic structure. The wine is left unfiltered and unsulfured, typically raised in neutral vessels (such as old oak or large casks) to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression, resulting in a raw, honest reflection of grape and place.

Food & Serving
This is a highly gastronomic orange wine that shines with boldly flavored, texture-driven dishes. Try it with Middle Eastern mezze, roasted root vegetables with herbs, pumpkin or squash risotto, or grilled fish with citrus and fresh herbs. It also pairs beautifully with soft washed-rind cheeses and aged Alpine cheeses, as well as fermented and pickled vegetables. Serve slightly cooler than a light red, around 12–14°C (54–57°F). A brief decant of 20–30 minutes helps the wine open up aromatically and soften its initial grip, especially if serving soon after opening.

Producer
Judith Beck GmbH is one of Burgenland’s leading names in natural and minimal-intervention winemaking, based around the village of Gols near Lake Neusiedl in eastern Austria. Founded as a family estate and now run by Judith Beck, the winery has been certified organic and works biodynamically, focusing on authentic, site-expressive wines from indigenous varieties like Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt and Neuburger. The Bambule line represents the most uncompromisingly natural side of the estate – always unfiltered, unsulfured and spontaneously fermented. Beck’s work has helped redefine Burgenland as a hotspot for thoughtful, terroir-driven wines and has earned her a strong reputation among international fans of low-intervention and orange wines.
