Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Goldloch Kabinett shines a pale straw to light lemon yellow, with youthful green reflections hinting at its freshness and energy. The nose is immediately expressive: a herbal-spicy lift – think wild herbs, lemon balm and a touch of white pepper – intertwined with fine exotic notes of citrus blossom, lime, passion fruit and a whisper of ripe stone fruit. On the palate, the wine is elegant and filigreed, with the classic Kabinett “Spiel” – that playful, dancing interplay of succulent sweetness and racy acidity. Delicate residual sugar is perfectly countered by a vibrant, mouthwatering line of acidity, while a finely etched, quartz-driven minerality runs through the finish, making each sip feel both airy and precise. Production
The Dorsheimer Goldloch is a steep, south-facing site in the Nahe, known for its quartz-rich soils that give Riesling both aromatic generosity and a distinctly mineral backbone. Here, vines benefit from optimal exposure and excellent drainage, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining bright acidity. Harvesting for this Kabinett is carried out by hand, with careful selection to capture perfectly ripe but not overripe Riesling berries suited to the finely balanced Kabinett style. In the cellar, Sebastian Schäfer follows a gentle, low-intervention approach: delicate pressing, cool, slow fermentation (typically in stainless steel and/or traditional large German oak) and extended lees contact to enhance texture, while preserving purity of fruit and site expression. The result is a crystalline, terroir-focused Kabinett crafted in very limited quantity as a Versteigerungswein for the VDP.Nahe auction.

This Goldloch Kabinett is exceptionally versatile at the table. Its interplay of sweetness and acidity makes it a superb match for spicy and aromatic cuisines: think Thai salads with lime and coriander, lightly spiced curries, or Vietnamese dishes with fresh herbs and chili. It also shines with classic pairings such as sushi and sashimi, ceviche, sashimi-grade tuna tartare, or soft, creamy cheeses like young goat cheese. Traditional German cuisine – for example, roast pork with apple, smoked trout, or dishes with mild sweetness – also harmonises beautifully. Serve well-chilled at 8–10°C. Decanting is not essential, but giving the wine 15–20 minutes in the glass allows the herbal-spicy and exotic nuances to fully unfold.
