Description
Jacques-Frederic Mugnier’s Musigny Grand Cru 2009 is a remarkable expression of one of Burgundy’s most revered sites, showing both power and finesse in equal measure. From a domaine known for patience and precision, this vintage stands out for its depth, structure, and unmistakable Grand Cru pedigree. It is a wine with real presence, built for collectors who appreciate Musigny’s rare combination of elegance and intensity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the kind of deep, youthful color you would expect from a serious 2009 Burgundy, hinting at its concentration and structure. The nose opens with dark berry fruit, smoke, licorice, and a distinct mineral edge, gradually revealing more floral and earthy nuances with air.
On the palate, the wine is broad, powerful, and firmly tannic, yet it never loses the refinement that defines top Chambolle-Musigny. Layers of ripe dark fruit are supported by a savory, smoky complexity and a long, mineral-driven finish. While already impressive, this is a wine with significant aging potential and will reward extended cellaring; it is expected to develop beautifully over the next 10 to 15 years and beyond.
Production
Sourced from Musigny, one of Burgundy’s most prestigious Grand Cru vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny, this wine benefits from an exceptional terroir marked by fine limestone soils and a site ideally suited to Pinot Noir. Jacques-Frederic Mugnier farms with a pragmatic, low-intervention approach, relying heavily on manual work in the vineyards and preventative measures that aim to preserve a healthy, balanced ecosystem. Vinification is guided by a philosophy of minimal technological interference, allowing the character of the vineyard and vintage to remain at the forefront.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as duck breast, roast squab, venison, truffle risotto, or mushroom-based preparations. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening young, as this will help the wine’s layered aromatics and structure unfold more gracefully.
Producer
Jacques-Frederic Mugnier is one of the benchmark domaines of Chambolle-Musigny, housed in the elegant Château de Chambolle-Musigny. Founded in 1863 by Frédéric Mugnier, the estate is especially respected for its enviable holdings in Chambolle-Musigny as well as Clos de la Maréchale in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Since Frédéric Mugnier took over in 1985, the quality has risen steadily, and the domaine is now celebrated for producing some of Burgundy’s most precise, age-worthy, and sought-after wines.
