Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2021 is a classic expression of Sangiovese from one of Tuscany’s most respected estates. Structured yet refined, it combines velvety tannins, vibrant freshness and impressive depth, reflecting both the character of Montalcino and Il Poggione’s long-standing commitment to traditional Brunello production. Founded in 1890, the estate is a historic reference point in the region.
Tasting Notes
The wine has a deep ruby-red colour with elegant garnet highlights. Its aromatic profile is intense and layered, opening with ripe cherry and dark fruit before revealing notes of liquorice, tobacco, smoke and subtle iron-like nuances.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and well structured, with polished, velvety tannins balanced by refreshing acidity. The finish is persistent and savoury, echoing the wine’s dark fruit, spice and mineral character. With its concentration, freshness and extended maturation, the 2021 vintage has excellent ageing potential and should develop gracefully over many years in bottle.
Production
The grapes come from Il Poggione’s vineyards on the western slopes of the Montalcino hills, at elevations ranging from approximately 150 to 450 metres and surrounded by woodland. The old vines, many of them more than 50 years old, benefit from a favourable microclimate and are cultivated using sustainable practices. After careful manual selection, the grapes ferment in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperatures with naturally occurring yeasts, using submerged-cap fermentation to encourage balanced extraction. Malolactic fermentation is followed by around 30 months of maturation in large French oak casks in underground cellars, with additional bottle ageing before release.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for hearty Tuscan cuisine, this Brunello pairs beautifully with roast or grilled red meat, game, braised dishes and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 18–20°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to breathe. Decanting for one to two hours is recommended when serving the wine young, both to soften its structure and to allow its layered aromas to fully emerge.
Producer
Il Poggione was founded by the Franceschi family in 1890 and is one of the historic estates of Montalcino. Set among vineyards and unspoilt woodland, the estate combines traditional winemaking with a considered approach to sustainable viticulture. Under the guidance of oenologist Fabrizio Bindocci, Il Poggione is known for Brunellos that unite depth, structure and long-term ageing potential, with maturation taking place in underground cellars approximately five metres below ground.
