Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is a classic expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most respected historic estates. Structured yet polished, it combines velvety tannins, vibrant freshness and remarkable depth, making it an excellent choice for both immediate enjoyment and long-term cellaring. Founded in 1890, Il Poggione is widely regarded as a benchmark producer in the region.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a vivid ruby-red colour with elegant garnet hues. Its aromatic profile is intense and refined, offering layers of ripe cherry and other red fruits alongside liquorice, dark tobacco and subtle smoky nuances. A distinctive mineral character, reminiscent of iron-rich earth, reflects its Montalcino origins.
On the palate, the 2020 Brunello is full-bodied and well structured, with balanced freshness and polished, velvety tannins. The concentrated fruit is supported by savoury complexity and a persistent finish marked by mineral notes. It is already approachable with decanting, but has the structure and balance to develop beautifully over many years in bottle.
Production
The grapes come from Il Poggione’s vineyards on the western slopes of Montalcino, situated between approximately 150 and 450 metres above sea level and surrounded by woodland. The old Sangiovese vines, many more than 50 years old, benefit from a favourable microclimate and are cultivated using sustainable methods. After careful manual selection, the grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with naturally occurring yeast and submerged-cap maceration, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine then matures for around 30 months in large French oak casks in the estate’s underground cellars, followed by further bottle ageing before release.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 18°C. Decant for one to two hours before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth, to allow its aromatic complexity and structure to open. Its depth and firm yet supple tannins make it an excellent partner for braised or grilled red meats, game, Tuscan-style dishes, roasted vegetables and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Il Poggione was established by the Franceschi family in 1890 and has played an important role in the development and recognition of Brunello di Montalcino. The estate combines traditional methods with careful modern vineyard management, including sustainable cultivation and meticulous hand harvesting. Under the guidance of winemaker Fabrizio Bindocci, its wines are known for their elegance, longevity and strong sense of place, with ageing carried out in cellars located around five metres underground.
