Il Borro Sangiovese Vigna Polissena 2020

Il Borro’s Vigna Polissena 2020 is an organic, single-vineyard Sangiovese from Valdarno di Sopra, offering a poised expression of Tuscany’s signature grape. Made on Ferruccio Ferragamo’s estate, it reflects the region’s winemaking heritage through bright fruit, elegant tannins and a distinctive slate-grown character.

Tasting Notes
The nose opens with sour cherry and peony, followed by hints of black pepper, liquorice, juniper and sandalwood. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and balanced, with lively acidity, refined tannins and a clean, lingering finish. Its structure suggests potential to develop in the bottle, though no specific drinking window is provided.

Production
The Sangiovese comes from the Polissena single vineyard, situated about 350 metres above sea level on well-drained slate soils. The organically farmed vines are managed for low yields, and the grapes are hand-harvested before being transferred to stainless-steel vats by gravity. Maceration lasts 22 days under controlled temperatures in a carbon-dioxide-rich environment; the wine then matures for 12 months in Allier oak barrels, followed by a short period in stainless steel, light filtration and six months of bottle ageing.

Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C with game, richly prepared meats such as Chianina beef, or mature cheeses. A brief decant of around 30 minutes can help the wine’s aromatic and savoury notes open up; serving it directly from the bottle is also suitable if given time in the glass.

Il Borro is a Tuscan estate owned by Ferruccio Ferragamo, centred on a carefully restored medieval village. Its Polissena cuvée is a tribute to the region’s Sangiovese tradition and comes from the estate’s namesake vineyard. The estate has farmed organically since 2015; the 2019 vintage received 92 points from Robert Parker.
