Hiedler Ried Gaisberg 1 ÖWT Reserve Riesling 2022 is a precision-made Austrian white wine that captures the cool-climate freshness and mineral drive of one of Kamptal’s most celebrated sites. From an Erste Lage vineyard with a long reputation for top-tier Riesling, it combines ripe fruit, tension, and elegance in a style that’s already expressive now but built to reward patience.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, polished profile with vibrant fruit and a distinctly stony, mineral edge. The nose is layered with ripe mango, peach, lemon, mandarin, rosemary, and a subtle floral touch of hibiscus, giving it both generosity and complexity. On the palate, the wine is juicy and full-bodied for Riesling, yet remains taut and focused, with mature citrus fruit at the forefront and a pronounced mineral backbone running through the finish. It has the concentration and balance to age gracefully over the next several years, gaining even more nuance and depth with time.

Production
The Gaisberg vineyard benefits from a milder microclimate and excellent soils of sand, stone, limestone, and quartz, making it one of Kamptal’s most important sites for Riesling. The grapes were hand-harvested at the end of October, destemmed before pressing, and fermented in stainless steel. Aging also took place in steel on the lees, preserving purity, freshness, and the vineyard’s mineral expression.

Food & Serving
This Riesling is a superb match for dishes with richness, spice, or a touch of sweetness in the sauce, such as roast pork, Asian cuisine, grilled shellfish, sushi, or poultry with citrus and herbs. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C, and decanting is not necessary, though a brief period in the glass will help the aromatics open beautifully.

Hiedler is a family-owned estate in Austria’s Kamptal with roots dating back to 1856, making it one of the region’s long-established wine names. Now led by Ludwig Hiedler, the fourth generation, with the fifth generation involved as well, the winery is widely respected for elegant, site-driven wines from steep vineyards planted on sandy, stony soils rich in limestone and quartz. Its reputation extends well beyond Austria, with wines featured on the lists of Michelin-starred restaurants in Copenhagen and internationally.
