Description
Heitz Wine Cellars Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1983 is one of Napa Valley’s true icons, a benchmark single-vineyard Cabernet that helped put American fine wine on the world stage. Sourced from the legendary Martha’s Vineyard in Oakville, it is celebrated for its unmistakable personality, especially its signature mint and eucalyptus character that has made the site famous for decades.
Tasting Notes
After more than four decades in bottle, the wine shows a beautifully evolved and complex profile. The nose opens with dried blackcurrants, cedar, tobacco, leather, and forest floor, lifted by the classic Martha’s Vineyard notes of mint and eucalyptus.
On the palate, it is graceful and harmonious, with silky tannins, fresh acidity, and impressive length. Dark fruit, cocoa, spice, and subtle mineral tones unfold in layers, finishing with a long, nuanced persistence. While it is fully mature now, this historic Cabernet still has the poise and structure that made it one of California’s great age-worthy wines.
Production
Martha’s Vineyard sits in Oakville, one of Napa Valley’s most prized Cabernet Sauvignon growing areas, where warm days and the site’s distinctive terroir give the wine its deep fruit, herbal lift, and unmistakable sense of place. Heitz’s careful vineyard selection and traditional vinification have long emphasized purity, balance, and the expressive character of the single vineyard rather than heavy extraction or overt oak.
Food & Serving
This mature Cabernet Sauvignon is a superb match for classic dishes such as roast beef, lamb, venison, or duck, as well as richly flavored mushroom dishes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant gently if needed to remove sediment; if the wine is fully fragile, a brief opening in the glass may be preferable to extended decanting.
Producer
Heitz Wine Cellars is one of Napa Valley’s most important pioneering estates, founded in 1961 and widely respected for helping define the region’s modern identity. The winery’s Martha’s Vineyard bottling became a landmark wine in American history, admired for its consistency, longevity, and unmistakable minty signature, and it remains one of the most collectible Cabernet Sauvignons from California.
