Description
Hartford Court Sevens Bench Pinot Noir 2014 is an elegant, characterful single-vineyard wine from Carneros, one of California’s most celebrated regions for Pinot Noir. Cool coastal conditions, low yields and well-drained soils create a refined expression that combines ripe fruit, lively freshness and impressive complexity. The wine also reflects Hartford Court’s long-standing focus on terroir-driven Pinot Noir from California’s coolest coastal vineyards.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep ruby hue and opens with inviting aromas of raspberry, boysenberry and black cherry, followed by floral violet, forest floor, truffle and exotic spice. Its aromatic profile balances ripe fruit with earthy, savoury nuances, giving it both immediate appeal and considerable depth.
On the palate, Sevens Bench is silky and beautifully structured, with layers of dark cherry, red berries and warming spice. Notes of black tea, woodland and Asian-inspired spices add complexity, while bright acidity keeps the wine fresh and energetic. Fine-grained tannins provide length without overshadowing its elegant character. The finish is long and nuanced, with lingering cherry, floral, mineral and spicy notes. At this stage, the 2014 vintage should be showing attractive maturity, while careful cellaring may allow it to develop further over the next few years.
Production
Sevens Bench expresses the cool-climate terroir of Carneros, where breezes from San Pablo Bay help preserve acidity and aromatic freshness. The vineyard’s well-drained soils and low yields contribute to concentration and structure. As a single-vineyard Pinot Noir, the wine is made to highlight the character of its specific site, balancing California’s natural fruit intensity with a more delicate, floral and spice-driven profile. Specific details of harvesting and vinification are not provided.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 14–16°C to emphasise the wine’s freshness and aromatic detail. It pairs especially well with roast duck, turkey, grilled or roasted poultry, pork tenderloin, mushroom dishes, truffle-based preparations and salmon. The wine is mature and can be enjoyed now, although decanting for around 30 minutes may help open its floral, earthy and spicy nuances.
Producer
Hartford Court is the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay-focused label of Hartford Family Winery, a California producer known for crafting expressive wines from distinctive coastal vineyards. The winery has built a strong reputation for small-lot, terroir-conscious wines that capture the character of sites in regions such as Carneros and the Russian River Valley. Sevens Bench is a fine example of this approach, showing why Carneros is regarded as one of California’s leading homes for elegant, cool-climate Pinot Noir.
