Description
Hartford Court Land’s Edge Pinot Noir 2018 is a distinguished single-vineyard wine from California’s cool, windswept Sonoma Coast. Shaped by the nearby Pacific Ocean, it combines concentrated berry fruit with remarkable freshness, mineral precision and the refined structure for which top Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is known.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep, nuanced ruby colour. Its aromatic profile opens with ripe cherries, wild raspberries and dark forest berries, followed by layers of dried flowers, spice, forest floor and a subtle saline suggestion of sea air. On the palate, it is silky and finely textured, with a juicy core of red and dark fruit supported by lively acidity and elegant mineral structure. Fine-grained tannins provide length, while notes of spice, tea leaf and florals unfold through the persistent finish.
Land’s Edge balances power and finesse beautifully: it offers the ripeness and concentration associated with California while retaining a cool-climate freshness and precision reminiscent of fine Old World Pinot Noir. Its structure and depth give it excellent potential to develop further in bottle, while already offering a compelling drinking experience.
Production
The vineyard’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean exposes the vines to cool temperatures and coastal winds, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly while preserving acidity and aromatic detail. This maritime terroir is particularly well suited to Pinot Noir, encouraging fruit concentration without sacrificing elegance. The wine is crafted to express the character of its single site, allowing the vineyard’s mineral, floral and savoury nuances to complement the ripe fruit and refined tannin structure.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 14–16°C. Its combination of freshness, silky texture and savoury complexity makes it an excellent partner for roast duck, mushroom dishes, herb-roasted poultry, grilled salmon, pork tenderloin and dishes featuring earthy ingredients such as truffle or forest mushrooms. Decanting is not essential, but a short decant of 30–60 minutes can help reveal the wine’s layered aromas and soften its youthful structure.
Producer
Hartford Court is the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay-focused label of Hartford Family Winery, a respected Sonoma producer known for expressive, site-driven wines from some of California’s most challenging and prestigious cool-climate vineyards. The estate has played an important role in demonstrating the quality and individuality of Sonoma Coast wines, particularly through its single-vineyard Pinot Noirs. Land’s Edge reflects this focus on place, translating the region’s maritime influence into a wine of depth, energy and elegance.
