Description

Gutzler Morstein Spätburgunder 2021 is a refined German Pinot Noir from one of Rheinhessen’s most celebrated sites, showing how beautifully Spätburgunder can express elegance, finesse, and mineral depth. Morstein is better known for world-class Riesling, but in the right hands it also delivers exceptional Pinot Noir with real Burgundian poise. This Grosses Gewächs highlights both the pedigree of the vineyard and Michael Gutzler’s skillful, restrained winemaking.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a clear, vibrant red color with the delicacy and transparency typical of high-quality Pinot Noir. The nose is lifted and expressive, with aromas of fresh raspberry, cherry, rhubarb, baked beetroot, violets, and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is bright, precise, and intensely fresh, with silken fruit carried by a finely chalky mineral frame. It combines elegance with energy and has the structure and balance to develop beautifully over time, gaining further nuance with a few years of cellaring.

Production
Morstein is a limestone-rich site in Rheinhessen that provides excellent conditions for finely etched, mineral-driven Pinot Noir. The vineyard’s cool, expressive terroir is key to the wine’s tension and finesse. As a Grosses Gewächs, this wine is crafted with meticulous attention to quality, typically through selective harvesting and gentle vinification designed to preserve purity, site character, and aromatic detail.

Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder pairs beautifully with duck, quail, roast guinea fowl, veal, wild mushroom dishes, and earthy vegetarian plates such as beetroot risotto or truffled pasta. Serve it at around 14–16°C, and consider decanting briefly if the wine is still youthful, so the aromatic layers can fully open in the glass.

Producer
Gutzler is a respected family-owned winery in Rheinhessen, known for producing wines with precision, clarity, and a strong sense of place. Under Michael Gutzler, the estate has earned an excellent reputation for both Riesling and Pinot Noir, with standout parcels like Morstein helping to cement its status among the region’s top producers.
