Description

Gut Hermannsberg Riesling Felsenberg Großes Gewächs 2020 is a sculpted, dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most dramatic vineyard sites. Sourced from a steep, south-facing slope of volcanic rock, it combines precision, mineral drive and impressive concentration in a wine that is already remarkably approachable. Classified as a VDP.Großes Gewächs, it represents the estate’s top dry expression from the historic Felsenberg vineyard, long celebrated for its powerful yet finely etched Rieslings.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Felsenberg GG shows a pale, luminous straw-yellow color with greenish reflections, signaling both youth and freshness. The nose opens with a focused, cool citrus profile – grapefruit and lime zest – wrapped in pronounced herbal and ethereal tones reminiscent of tarragon, verbena and wild mountain herbs. Underneath, there’s a subtle smoky edge, hints of gunflint and a discreet touch of spontaneous fermentation notes that add complexity without dominating the fruit. On the palate, the wine is strikingly straight and linear, almost reed-slim yet tightly built, with a fine, spicy grip and a razor-sharp mineral backbone. The acidity is vibrant but perfectly integrated, driving flavors of citrus, green apple skin, crushed stone and delicate herbal nuances across the tongue. Despite its precision and tension, the 2020 is unusually accessible in its youth for a Gut Hermannsberg GG, especially with some air. The finish is long, saline and crystal-clear, promising excellent aging potential. Well-cellared, this vintage should evolve beautifully over 10–15 years or more, gaining further depth, complexity and textural creaminess while retaining its stony core.

Production
The Felsenberg vineyard sits on steep, terraced slopes above the left bank of the Nahe near Schlossböckelheim, rooted in striking volcanic melaphyr rock that imparts a distinctive smoky-mineral character to the wines. The parcel farmed by Gut Hermannsberg is south-facing and warmly exposed, benefitting particularly from the late afternoon and evening sun, which supports full and reliable ripening even in cooler years. The Riesling vines are tended with meticulous, quality-focused work in the vineyard, and harvesting is done by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are selected. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented, typically with indigenous yeasts, in stainless steel and/or traditional vessels, allowing a slow, measured fermentation that preserves the vineyard’s character. The wine is aged on its fine lees for additional texture and complexity before bottling as a VDP.Großes Gewächs, with minimal intervention to showcase the purity of the Felsenberg terroir.

Food & Serving
This precise, mineral-driven Riesling is a natural partner for refined, aromatic cuisine. It pairs beautifully with delicately prepared seafood – think scallops, prawns, or grilled sea bass – as well as freshwater fish like trout or char. Its herbal and citrus notes also make it excellent with dishes featuring tarragon, fennel, or dill, and it shines alongside poultry in light cream or citrus-based sauces, sushi and sashimi, or fine vegetable dishes such as asparagus and artichokes. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C, to let the aromatics unfold gradually. A short decanting of 30–60 minutes, especially in its youth, helps the wine open up and reveal its full complexity.

Producer
Gut Hermannsberg is one of Germany’s historic Riesling estates, with roots dating back to the early 20th century when it was founded as a state domain and planted from scratch on some of the Nahe’s steepest, most challenging slopes. Today the winery is renowned for its collection of Grosse Lagen (grand cru) vineyards, including Felsenberg, which consistently yield Rieslings of remarkable precision, minerality and aging capacity. As a member of the prestigious VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), Gut Hermannsberg has played a key role in elevating the Nahe’s reputation on the world stage and is widely regarded as a benchmark producer for dry Riesling in the region. Their Großes Gewächs bottlings, such as the Felsenberg, regularly attract high critical acclaim and are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
