Description

Guigal La Turque 2003 is one of the landmark wines of Côte-Rôtie, a powerful yet sensuous expression of Syrah from one of the appellation’s most celebrated single vineyards. Sourced from steep, terraced slopes in the northern Rhône, this cuvée marries intensity, depth and aromatic complexity in a way that has made it a benchmark for collectors. The hot 2003 vintage endowed La Turque with remarkable ripeness and concentration, resulting in a wine that has been thrilling enthusiasts for decades and still has many years of life ahead.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2003 La Turque is deep, opaque ruby with a dark, inky core and just a hint of garnet at the rim, revealing its age and pedigree. The nose is strikingly expressive, with layers of smoked herbs, grilled and cured meats, black olives, blackcurrant and blackberry compote, intertwined with violets, licorice, peppery spice and a touch of roasted coffee and graphite. It’s a bouquet that unfolds slowly, gaining complexity with air. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, richly textured Côte-Rôtie, showing the hallmark power of the 2003 vintage but wrapped in Guigal’s luxurious, polished style. Dense black fruit—cassis, black cherry and plum—is framed by sweet, ripe tannins and vibrant notes of smoked bacon, spice, licorice and dark chocolate. The mid-palate is opulent and mouthfilling, yet the wine retains precision and a long, resonant finish that simply does not let go. At this stage, it is entering a beautiful plateau of maturity, with 2–3 further decades of evolution possible in a cool cellar, where tertiary notes of leather, truffle and tobacco will continue to develop.

Production
La Turque comes from a single, steeply sloped vineyard in Côte-Rôtie, planted primarily to Syrah with a small percentage of Viognier, on a complex mix of schist and mica-rich soils that enhance both structure and aromatic lift. The vines are worked by hand due to the extreme incline of the terraces, and yields are kept very low to ensure maximum concentration. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then sorted meticulously. Traditional northern Rhône methods are combined with Guigal’s exacting standards: a long maceration and fermentation, followed by extended aging—often around 42 months—in new French oak barrels. This lengthy élevage, a hallmark of Guigal’s top Côte-Rôtie wines, refines the tannins, builds texture and integrates the intense fruit, oak spice and savory complexity into a seamless whole.

Food & Serving
The 2003 La Turque is best showcased alongside richly flavored, protein-driven dishes that can match its intensity and savory depth. Think roasted or grilled lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, slow-braised beef short ribs, venison or other game in red wine reduction, or earthy dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles and root vegetables. Mature hard cheeses and well-aged Comté or Beaufort also work beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F) to highlight both freshness and complexity. Given its concentration and age, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open and shed any remaining youthful edges, though an older bottle should be handled gently and monitored as it evolves in the decanter.

Producer
Founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal and now run by his son Marcel and grandson Philippe, E. Guigal is widely regarded as one of the great estates of the Rhône Valley and a defining force in Côte-Rôtie’s modern reputation. From humble beginnings in Ampuis, the family has built an international following for its meticulous vineyard work and uncompromising approach to élevage. The trio of single-vineyard Côte-Rôties—La Mouline, La Turque and La Landonne—are among the most sought-after Syrah-based wines in the world, frequently earning top scores and critical acclaim. Guigal’s influence extends throughout the Rhône, where their commitment to quality, from everyday bottlings to blue-chip icons like La Turque, has helped set the standard for the region’s finest wines.
