Description

Guigal La Mouline 2019 is one of Côte-Rôtie’s most coveted icons – a sensual, silk-textured red that captures the essence of the fabled Côte Blonde. From old vines planted on impossibly steep terraces, this cuvée marries power with grace in a way very few Northern Rhône Syrahs can. The 2019 vintage is especially flamboyant, already showing remarkable polish and depth while promising decades of evolution in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Mouline 2019 shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple core with a slight garnet rim forming at the edge, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is intensely expressive and layered: juniper, black cherry and wild berry fruit intertwine with crushed violets, salted cured meat, vanilla, cedar, and a cool lift of mint and spice. As it opens, more floral and exotic nuances emerge, with hints of licorice, graphite and fine toasted oak. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, but extraordinarily velvety and polished, with a seamless texture that glides rather than grips. Dense black cherry, ripe plum and blackberry are supported by bright, refreshing acidity that keeps everything in perfect balance. Savory notes of smoked game, tapenade, and cracked pepper are wrapped in refined tannins and beautifully integrated new oak. The finish is long, pure and layered, echoing dark fruit, florals and spice for minutes. This 2019 La Mouline has significant structure and concentration; it will reward patience, with a prime drinking window likely opening from around 2028 and extending for 20+ years in a good cellar.

Production
La Mouline hails from the steep, amphitheater-shaped terraces of Côte Blonde in Côte-Rôtie, where the warm, sun-drenched exposure and schistous soils with streaks of granite and mica give wines of remarkable perfume and finesse. The vineyard is predominantly old-vine Syrah with a small proportion of co-planted Viognier, some vines approaching a century in age, all worked and harvested by hand due to the extreme slopes. Yields are intentionally kept very low to concentrate flavor, and only perfectly ripe bunches are selected. In the cellar, the grapes are traditionally vinified with a portion of whole clusters, encouraging aromatic complexity and fine tannin structure, followed by an extended élevage in 100% new French oak barrels. La Mouline typically spends around three and a half years in barrel, allowing the wine to gain its signature silkiness and integration before bottling.

Food & Serving
Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2019 is a luxurious match for refined, richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, pigeon or duck breast, venison, and slow-braised beef or veal cheeks. Its floral and spicy nuances also work beautifully with dishes featuring wild mushrooms, truffles, root vegetables, and savory Mediterranean herbs. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) in large-bowled glasses to let the aromatics fully unfurl. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to soften the structure and release the layers of perfume; as it matures, a gentle 1-hour decant is sufficient, mainly to separate any sediment and allow the wine to breathe.

Producer
Founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis, E. Guigal has become the reference point for Côte-Rôtie and one of the most influential estates in the Rhône Valley. Under Marcel and now Philippe Guigal, the domaine has elevated the region’s reputation worldwide, largely thanks to its trio of legendary single-vineyard wines – La Mouline, La Turque and La Landonne – often referred to as the “La-Las.” La Mouline, sourced from the Côte Blonde, is renowned for its seductively aromatic style and velvety texture, and is consistently among the highest-rated Syrah-based wines in the world. Guigal’s meticulous vineyard work, ruthlessly selective fruit sourcing and exceptionally long, careful élevage have set a benchmark for quality, making the estate a cornerstone of Northern Rhône excellence.
