Description
Guigal La Mouline 2015 is one of the legendary “La-Las” of Côte-Rôtie and a benchmark for modern Northern Rhône Syrah. Crafted from old terraces in the Côte Blonde and lifted by a generous touch of Viognier, it marries opulence with remarkable finesse. The 2015 vintage, widely hailed as one of the greatest Rhône years in recent decades, has endowed La Mouline with depth, structure, and a long, graceful life ahead.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Mouline 2015 shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple core with a bright, youthful rim that hints at its ongoing evolution. The nose is initially reserved, but with air it unfurls notes of dark berries, black cherry, and wild raspberry, wrapped in cedar, vanilla, and sweet spice from the finely judged oak. Subtle floral tones—violet, rose petal, and a touch of orange blossom from the 11% Viognier—add lift and complexity.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and lavish yet never heavy, with a silken, almost Burgundian texture. Layers of blackberry, blackcurrant, and red plum are interwoven with hints of licorice, smoked meat, and graphite, framed by polished tannins and vibrant acidity. The oak is present but beautifully integrated, contributing nuances of cedar, vanilla bean, and cocoa without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is long, elegant, and persistent, promising further aromatic complexity with time. Still somewhat closed in its youth, 2015 La Mouline has substantial aging potential; it will reward careful cellaring over 15–25+ years, gradually revealing more savory, truffle, and game notes as it matures.
Production
La Mouline comes from steep, terraced vineyards in the Côte Blonde sector of Côte-Rôtie, where lighter, mica-schist and granite-based soils, with some clay and limestone, lend the wine its hallmark perfume and finesse. The vines here are famously old—many parcels exceeding 50 years—which naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with meticulous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery. The blend is predominantly Syrah with about 11% Viognier, traditionally co-fermented, which enhances color stability, aromatics, and texture. Vinification involves a careful, temperature-controlled fermentation followed by an extended élevage in oak, including a significant proportion of new barrels. Guigal’s precise, long barrel aging and patient approach result in a wine of great polish, structure, and depth, built to unfold slowly over time.
Food & Serving
La Mouline 2015 shines alongside refined, richly flavored dishes: roast lamb with herbs, venison or other game birds, beef tenderloin with truffle jus, or slow-braised short ribs are all excellent companions. It also pairs beautifully with earthy cuisine—mushroom risotto, lentil and duck confit, or aged cheeses like Comté, Beaufort, or well-matured hard sheep’s cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) in large-bowled glasses to allow full aromatic expression. Given the wine’s youthful structure and its tendency to be closed in its early years, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended now; as it matures, a shorter decant of 30–60 minutes will be sufficient to let it open gracefully.
Producer
Founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the tiny village of Ampuis, the Guigal estate has become one of the Rhône Valley’s most influential and respected producers. Under the guidance of Marcel and now Philippe Guigal, the domaine has elevated Côte-Rôtie to worldwide renown, with the trio of single-vineyard wines—La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne—standing among the most sought-after Syrahs on the planet. Guigal’s commitment to meticulous vineyard work, strict selection, and extended, carefully managed élevage has set a benchmark for quality in the region. Their wines consistently receive top critical acclaim and are considered reference points for the style and potential of Northern Rhône terroir.
