Description

Guigal La Mouline 2005 is one of the truly legendary expressions of Côte-Rôtie – a wine that marries opulence and finesse with almost effortless grace. From the steep terraces of the Côte Blonde, this cuvée is renowned for its silky texture, haunting aromatics and immense aging potential. The 2005 vintage stands out as a perfectly balanced, deeply concentrated La Mouline that has already entered a glorious drinking window yet still promises years of evolution.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2005 La Mouline shows a deep, saturated ruby to garnet core with a faintly brick-tinged rim, reflecting both its concentration and its graceful maturity. The nose is intensely expressive and layered: aromas of smoked and grilled meats, iron and warm earth weave together with spring flowers, violets and a lifted, almost perfumed spice. Ripe raspberry and blackberry fruit emerge with air, supported by subtle notes of licorice, incense, and fine cedar from its élevage. On the palate, this is classic La Mouline: incredibly silky, seamless and pure. The richly textured fruit—blackberries, wild raspberries and black cherries—is wrapped in ultra-fine tannins and vibrant acidity, giving the wine both depth and precision. Savory nuances of smoked game, cured meat, graphite and a touch of floral sweetness add complexity through the long, persistent finish. While already stunningly harmonious, the 2005 still has the structure and freshness to continue evolving beautifully for at least another decade or more when well cellared.

Production
La Mouline is sourced from incredibly steep, terraced vineyards in the Côte Blonde sector of Côte-Rôtie, an area famed for its lighter, limestone-rich soils over schist that naturally favor perfume and finesse. The vines here are very old, many over 50 years, contributing to the wine’s concentration and complexity. Grapes (predominantly Syrah with a small percentage of co-fermented Viognier) are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness from these low-yielding parcels. In the cellar, Guigal employs extended macerations and traditional fermentation before the wine is aged patiently in 100% new French oak barrels, where it spends several years refining its texture, integrating oak, and developing its signature aromatic complexity.

Food & Serving
This 2005 La Mouline pairs beautifully with refined, savory dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef short ribs, duck breast, or venison with a red wine reduction. It also shines with dishes that echo its smoky and floral character, like grilled entrecôte, game birds, or mushroom-based cuisine with truffle accents. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in generous glasses to allow full aromatic development. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended at this stage of its evolution to gently awaken the wine and reveal its full range of aromas and flavors.

Producer
Maison Guigal, founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis, has become the benchmark producer of the Northern Rhône and one of the most respected names in the world of fine wine. Under the leadership of Marcel and Philippe Guigal, the estate has elevated Côte-Rôtie to global stardom, largely thanks to its trio of iconic single-vineyard wines, known as the “La-Las”: La Mouline, La Turque and La Landonne. La Mouline, from the Côte Blonde, is typically the most seductive and perfumed of the three, and has earned countless top scores and critical acclaim over the decades. Guigal’s meticulous vineyard work, low yields and exacting standards in the cellar have cemented its reputation as a reference-point producer in the Rhône Valley.
