Description
Guigal La Mouline 2001 is a benchmark Côte-Rôtie and one of the Rhône Valley’s most coveted single-vineyard wines. This cuvée is known for its silky elegance, precision and depth, showing how power and finesse can coexist in a mature Northern Rhône Syrah. The 2001 vintage offers a beautifully composed, focused profile that has evolved into a complex and seductive expression of its steep Côte Blonde terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2001 La Mouline shows a deep garnet core with brick and tawny reflections at the rim, reflecting over two decades of graceful evolution. The nose is wonderfully expressive: vibrant red and black berries, cracked black pepper, smoked bacon, cured meat and game, layered with violets, sweet spice, leather, and a subtle touch of cedar and truffle.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied yet lifted and fresh, with a juicy, precise core of fruit framed by lively acidity. Flavors of wild raspberry, dark cherry and blackberry mingle with notes of pepper, smoked bacon fat, roasted herbs, and a savoury, gamey complexity. The tannins are beautifully polished and ultra-fine, giving a velvety texture without any heaviness, and the finish is long, persistent and detailed. At this stage, the wine is fully open and expressive; well-stored bottles are at, or just past, peak maturity and should continue to drink beautifully over the next several years, though it is not a wine to forget in the cellar for too long.
Production
La Mouline comes from the famed Côte Blonde sector of Côte-Rôtie, an amphitheatre-shaped, terraced vineyard with steep slopes of mica-schist and granite, offering excellent drainage and optimal sun exposure. The cuvée is based predominantly on Syrah with a small proportion of co-fermented Viognier from very old vines, traditionally some of the oldest in the appellation. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal ripeness due to the extreme incline of the vineyard, then sorted rigorously to ensure only perfect fruit enters the winery. Guigal typically employs a long maceration and fermentation in temperature-controlled vats before aging the wine for an extended period in new French oak barriques, allowing the structure to integrate and the signature silkiness and aromatic complexity of La Mouline to emerge.
Food & Serving
This mature Côte-Rôtie is an exceptional partner for refined, savoury dishes: roast lamb with herbs, duck breast, venison or other game, braised short ribs, and dishes featuring wild mushrooms or truffle. It also pairs beautifully with slow-cooked veal, pigeon, or richly flavored poultry, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and texture. Given its age, decant gently 30–60 minutes before serving to remove any sediment and allow the wine to unfurl, but avoid extended decanting that could tire the more delicate mature nuances.
Producer
Founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal in Ampuis, E. Guigal has become the reference point for the Northern Rhône and a leading name in the world of fine wine. The estate has played a crucial role in elevating Côte-Rôtie from a relatively obscure appellation to one of France’s most prestigious terroirs. La Mouline is one of Guigal’s legendary “La-Las” (alongside La Turque and La Landonne), a trio of single-vineyard wines that have defined the pinnacle of Côte-Rôtie for decades. With a relentless focus on vineyard selection, low yields and meticulous élevage, Guigal has earned countless top scores and global acclaim, cementing its status as a benchmark producer for Syrah-based wines of depth, precision and longevity.
