Description

From one of the Rhône Valley’s most revered names, Guigal La Mouline 2000 is a mature, silken expression of Côte-Rôtie at its most seductive. Sourced from the legendary La Mouline vineyard in the Côte Blonde, this cuvée is prized for its perfumed elegance, lavish texture and seamless integration of fruit, spice and oak. The 2000 vintage is now in a beautiful drinking window, showing its full complexity while retaining the charm and finesse that have made La Mouline one of the most sought-after wines in the region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2000 La Mouline shows a deep garnet core fading to a brick-tinged rim, reflecting its graceful evolution in bottle. The nose is wonderfully open and expressive, with layers of violet, rose petal and dried flowers weaving through notes of black cherry, plum, smoked bacon, cured meat and black olive, all wrapped in sweet spice, cedar and a hint of truffle and forest floor. On the palate, this is rich yet caressingly soft, with no hard edges, as noted by critics. Concentrated dark fruit – blackberry, black cherry and mulberry – is lifted by a touch of redcurrant and the floral lift typical of the Côte Blonde. Savory tones of leather, game, tapenade and smoked meat emerge with air, framed by ultra-fine, resolved tannins and vibrant, lingering acidity. The finish is long, silky and nuanced, with echoes of spice, violet and earth. The wine is in a superb drinking phase now, offering fully developed complexity; well-stored bottles should continue to drink beautifully over the next decade and likely beyond, but there is no need to wait.

Production
La Mouline is a single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie from steep, terraced slopes in the Côte Blonde sector, rooted in a mix of schist with lighter, more limestone-influenced soils that give finesse, perfume and supple texture. The parcel is famed for its extremely old vines, predominantly Syrah with a small but important proportion of Viognier co-planted in the vineyard, contributing aromatic lift and silkiness. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand due to the severe slopes, with strict selection of perfectly ripe bunches. Guigal ferments the grapes traditionally, often with a portion of whole clusters, followed by an extended élevage in new French oak barrels, where the wine spends around 40 months slowly gaining its characteristic polish, integration and complexity before bottling.

Food & Serving
This mature La Mouline is superb at the table with refined dishes that echo its savory depth: roast lamb with herbs, duck breast, venison or other game birds, braised beef cheeks, and dishes featuring mushrooms, truffle or slow-cooked root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with richly flavored poultry, pigeon, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture. For current drinking, decant gently for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to unfurl its full bouquet, taking care to leave any sediment in the bottle.

Producer
Founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis, E. Guigal has become one of the defining producers of the Rhône Valley and a driving force behind the modern renaissance of Côte-Rôtie. The estate is especially renowned for its trio of single-vineyard wines from Côte-Rôtie – La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque – often referred to as the “La-Las,” which regularly garner top scores and international acclaim. Over three generations, the Guigal family has combined meticulous vineyard work with long, exacting élevage in their cellars, setting a benchmark for quality and consistency in the region and cementing their status as one of the Rhône’s most influential and collectible producers.
