Guigal La Landonne 2019 is one of the Rhône Valley’s true icons – a powerful, deeply structured Côte-Rôtie from one of the appellation’s most legendary single vineyards. In 2019, this cuvée shows all the signature hallmarks of La Landonne: intense concentration, muscular tannins and a remarkable depth of dark fruit and savory complexity. Produced only in the finest vintages and always in very limited quantities, it’s a collector’s wine that is built to evolve for decades.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 La Landonne is impenetrably dark, almost opaque, with a dense purple-black core and a narrow, inky rim – immediately signaling the wine’s concentration and youth. The nose is layered and expressive: cracked black pepper, wild herbs and garrigue lead the way, followed by notes of espresso, roasted meat, smoked bacon, licorice and graphite, wrapped around a core of ripe black plum and black cherry.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and powerful, yet finely chiselled. Ripe black fruits – plum compote, black cherry and blackberry – are interwoven with savory tones of charcuterie, grilled meat, dark cocoa and roasted coffee. The structure is formidable, with abundant, firm but refined tannins and a vibrant, balancing acidity that keeps the wine precise rather than heavy. The finish is very long, echoing with pepper, spice and dark fruit. This 2019 has outstanding aging potential: it will reward patience, unfolding gradually over 15–30+ years, gaining even more nuance, silkier texture and tertiary complexity.
Production
La Landonne is sourced from a famed, steeply sloping lieu-dit in Côte-Rôtie, planted predominantly with Syrah on poor, heat-retaining soils rich in schist and iron oxide. The extreme gradient and terraced vineyards demand meticulous, largely manual work throughout the season, from hand-tending the vines to hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness. Guigal is known for rigorous selection, taking only the best bunches to the cellar. Vinification is traditionally focused and precise: long fermentations with extended maceration extract profound color, tannin and flavor, followed by an extended élevage in oak barrels, much of it new, to refine the wine’s structure and add subtle layers of spice and toast without overwhelming the terroir-driven character.
Food & Serving
This is a commanding, gastronomic wine best paired with richly flavored, protein-driven dishes. Think roasted or grilled lamb, dry-aged ribeye, venison, braised short ribs, duck with black pepper sauce, or game birds with truffle and wild mushrooms. It also works beautifully with slow-cooked stews and dishes featuring smoked or cured meats. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to showcase its aromatics without emphasizing the alcohol. In its youth, decant generously – at least 2–3 hours, and longer if possible – to allow the tight structure to relax and the layers of fruit, spice and savory nuance to open. Older bottles will need more delicate handling and a shorter decant, just enough to remove sediment and let the bouquet blossom.
