Description
Guigal La Landonne 2018 is one of the icons of Côte-Rôtie and a benchmark for pure, powerful Syrah from the Northern Rhône. Sourced from the legendary La Landonne lieu-dit, this cuvée is famed for its intensity, structure and remarkable capacity to age gracefully for decades. In the 2018 vintage, richness and depth are beautifully balanced by freshness and a refined, savoury complexity, making it a standout wine for serious collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Landonne 2018 shows a deep, opaque ruby to nearly black core with a violet rim, immediately signalling its concentration and youth. The nose is bold and layered: dark blackberry and blackcurrant mingle with smoked meat, black olive tapenade, cracked black pepper and hints of violets, licorice and graphite. Subtle notes of toasted oak, cocoa and warm spice weave through, adding further dimension.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, dense and impeccably structured, with powerful yet polished tannins and a vibrant backbone of acidity. Flavours of black plum, cassis and mulberry are underscored by charcuterie, roasted coffee bean, cedar, and a distinctly Rhône-style savoury, smoky-mineral edge. The finish is very long, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice and fine, mouthcoating tannin. Still youthful and tightly knit, the 2018 La Landonne has excellent aging potential; it will reward patience over 15–30 years and likely beyond, gradually gaining more truffle, leather and gamey complexity as it evolves.
Production
La Landonne is sourced exclusively from the steep, terraced slopes of the Côte Brune in Côte-Rôtie, where dark, iron-rich schist soils and excellent drainage naturally limit yields and produce intensely flavoured Syrah. Vines are traditionally hand-tended and harvested by hand due to the extreme gradients of the vineyard, with careful selection of only the healthiest, ripest bunches. In the cellar, La Landonne is vinified as 100% Syrah, typically with a proportion of whole bunches to enhance structure and aromatic complexity. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels, followed by an extended maturation—often around 40+ months—in new French oak barrels. This long élevage polishes the wine’s formidable tannins, integrates the oak and allows the cuvée’s distinct, savoury-mineral character to fully emerge.
Food & Serving
La Landonne 2018 is a superb partner for rich, flavourful dishes such as roasted or braised lamb, beef ribeye, venison, wild boar, or slow-cooked short ribs. It also shines with game birds, truffled dishes, earthy mushroom preparations and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is highly recommended to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; older bottles may require a gentler, shorter decant primarily to separate sediment.
Producer
Founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis, E. Guigal has grown into one of the Rhône Valley’s most revered producers and a global reference for Syrah. The estate’s single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie wines—La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque—are known collectively as the “La-Las” and rank among the most sought-after wines in the world. Guigal’s meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and exacting standards in the cellar have helped elevate Côte-Rôtie’s reputation, showcasing its potential for producing wines of profound depth, finesse and longevity. Over the decades, Guigal has garnered top scores from international critics and played a central role in defining the modern prestige of the Northern Rhône.
