Description

Guigal La Landonne 2009 is one of the Northern Rhône’s great benchmark wines, a powerful, single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie crafted entirely from Syrah. The 2009 vintage is particularly seductive, offering immediate appeal while retaining the depth and structure that have made La Landonne legendary among collectors. This is a wine that marries smoky, wild complexity with massive concentration and truly profound aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2009 La Landonne is deep, opaque garnet with a nearly black core and a faint brick-red rim just beginning to show its evolution. The nose is intensely expressive and layered: notes of smoked and cured meats, game, black olives, charcoal, cracked black pepper, and warm dark earth unfold over a core of ripe blackberries, black raspberries, and plum compote. On the palate, this is dense, full-bodied, and unapologetically concentrated, with a luxurious, almost decadent texture. The dark fruit—blackberry, cassis, and macerated black cherry—is wrapped in savory tones of bacon fat, grilled herbs, licorice, and peppery spice. The tannins are abundant, firm, and very finely grained, giving the wine a powerful structure that carries through a very long, smoky, saline finish. While already captivating for those who enjoy bold, structured reds, this 2009 still has years of development ahead and can easily age for several more decades under proper cellaring conditions.

Production
La Landonne is sourced from one of Côte-Rôtie’s most revered single vineyards, a steep, terraced hillside of primarily schist and clay-limestone soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The Syrah is harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, from old vines that dig deep into the poor, stony terroir, contributing to the wine’s hallmark power and minerality. Guigal practices meticulous sorting in the cellar, followed by a long, traditional fermentation and extended maceration to fully extract color, tannin, and aroma. The wine is then aged for several years in oak, including a significant proportion of new barrels, allowing the intense fruit and formidable structure to harmonize and gain the complex, smoky, savory nuances that define La Landonne.

Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic wine that shines alongside rich, robust dishes: think roasted or grilled lamb, venison, wild boar, duck confit, braised short ribs, or slow-cooked beef cheeks. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring black olives, wild mushrooms, truffles, and peppery sauces, as well as aged hard cheeses. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting is strongly recommended—at least 2–3 hours for a younger bottle, and 1–2 hours for a more mature one—to allow the wine’s aromatic complexity and texture to fully emerge.

Producer
E. Guigal, founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal in Ampuis, is one of the most influential and respected producers in the Rhône Valley, particularly in Côte-Rôtie. The estate almost single-handedly helped re-establish Côte-Rôtie’s global reputation with its trio of iconic single-vineyard wines—La Landonne, La Mouline, and La Turque—often referred to as the “La-Las.” Known for rigorous vineyard work, extreme selection, and long élevage, Guigal consistently produces some of the region’s most sought-after and age-worthy Syrahs. La Landonne, in particular, is famed for being the most powerful and structured of the three, regularly earning top critical acclaim and cementing Guigal’s status as a benchmark for Northern Rhône excellence.
