Description

Guigal La Landonne 2005 is one of the benchmark Côte-Rôties of its era – a monumental, single-vineyard Syrah that ranks alongside the greatest vintages ever produced from this iconic slope. Sourced exclusively from the famed La Landonne lieu-dit on the Côte Brune, it marries immense concentration with Guigal’s signature polish and precision. Often mentioned in the same breath as legendary years such as 1990, 1999, 2003, 2009 and 2010, the 2005 is still in its youth and built for the long haul.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2005 La Landonne is virtually opaque, an inky, dense purple-black that clings to the sides of the glass with slow, stained legs. The nose is deeply layered and brooding, opening gradually with dark blackberry and blackcurrant, roasted plum, black olive tapenade, smoked meat, cracked black pepper and a subtle hint of violets, licorice and graphite. With air, more savory complexity emerges: game, cured bacon, leather and a touch of espresso and cocoa. On the palate this is full-bodied, powerful and tightly structured, with masses of dark, pristine fruit wrapped in firm but ultra-fine tannins. The wine is intensely concentrated yet impeccably balanced, its savory, meaty character interwoven with notes of olive, spice and mineral. The acidity is fresh and taut, giving drive and lift to the richness, and the finish is extraordinarily long, echoing with smoked herbs, tapenade and black fruit. Still very much in its adolescence, this 2005 has decades of development ahead; properly stored, it can easily evolve and improve for 30–50 years or more.

Production
La Landonne is a steep, terraced vineyard on the Côte Brune of Côte-Rôtie, characterized by poor, dark schist and iron-rich soils that naturally limit yields and produce Syrah of great structure and intensity. Guigal farms these old vines (often 40+ years) with meticulous attention, harvesting by hand at optimal ripeness given the vineyard’s challenging, high-density plantings and slope. In the cellar, La Landonne is traditionally vinified as 100% Syrah, with long macerations to extract color, tannin and flavor, followed by an extended élevage – typically around 40 months – in new French oak barrels. This long, patient aging polishes the formidable structure, layers in subtle spice notes and helps integrate the immense concentration that is a hallmark of this cuvée.

Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic wine that shines alongside richly flavored, protein-driven dishes: think roasted or grilled lamb, ribeye or côte de boeuf, slow-braised beef cheeks, venison, wild boar, or duck with black olive and herb accents. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles or roasted root vegetables, as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Tomme. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its current stage, decanting is essential: allow at least 2–3 hours in a large decanter to let the wine unfold, and for bottles at peak maturity, a gentle 1–2 hour decant is usually ideal to showcase its full aromatic complexity.

Producer
Founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal, the Guigal estate has become the reference point for Côte-Rôtie and one of the most influential producers in the Rhône Valley. From its base in Ampuis, the family – now led by Marcel and Philippe Guigal – has elevated the prestige of the region through meticulous vineyard work and uncompromising standards in the cellar. The trio of single-vineyard Côte-Rôties – La Mouline, La Turque and La Landonne – are among the most coveted Syrahs in the world and have helped define the modern image of Côte-Rôtie. Consistent critical acclaim, including numerous perfect and near-perfect scores from leading wine critics, has cemented Guigal’s reputation as a benchmark producer, crafting wines that combine power, precision and extraordinary aging potential.
