Description

Guigal La Landonne 2000 is a benchmark Côte-Rôtie from one of the appellation’s most revered single vineyards. Crafted entirely from Syrah, this cuvée is known for its depth, structure, and remarkable ability to age. The 2000 vintage is now beautifully evolved, offering the complexity and silkiness of maturity while still retaining the backbone that has made La Landonne a modern Rhône icon.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2000 La Landonne shows a deep garnet core with a brick-tinged rim, reflecting its graceful evolution in bottle. The nose is intensely aromatic and complex: think blackcurrant and black cherry compote layered with smoked meat, cured bacon, black olive tapenade, cracked pepper, dried violets, leather, and a touch of truffle and tobacco leaf from age. On the palate, this is full-bodied yet resolved, with no hard edges—tannins are fine and polished, wrapping around a core of dark fruit, licorice, and savory herbs. Notes of game, graphite, and earthy spice unfurl with air, giving a very classic, old-world Côte-Rôtie profile. The wine is drinking beautifully now, in a mature, open-knit phase, but from a well-stored bottle you can expect it to continue to offer pleasure for several more years, evolving further into more tertiary, earthy nuances rather than primary fruit.

Production
La Landonne is sourced from the famous, steep, terraced slopes of Côte-Rôtie, on predominantly schist and iron-rich soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate the Syrah. The vineyard’s southern exposure ensures excellent ripening, while the northern Rhône’s cooling influences preserve freshness and aromatic precision. Grapes are typically harvested by hand due to the extreme incline of the terraces, ensuring careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. In the cellar, Guigal is known for long macerations to extract depth and structure, followed by extended élevage in small oak barrels—largely new—giving La Landonne its signature combination of power, polish, and age-worthiness.

Food & Serving
This mature La Landonne pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes that echo its gamy and smoky nuances: roasted lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef, venison or other game, duck breast, and dishes with wild mushrooms or truffle. It also works wonderfully with aged hard cheeses and robust, earthy preparations. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); given the wine’s age, decant gently 30–60 minutes before serving to remove sediment and allow the aromas to open, but avoid overly aggressive aeration to preserve its more delicate, tertiary notes.

Producer
Founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal in Ampuis, E. Guigal has become the defining estate of Côte-Rôtie and one of the most influential producers in the Rhône Valley. Under the stewardship of Marcel and Philippe Guigal, the domaine pioneered and perfected the concept of single-vineyard “La La” wines—La Landonne, La Mouline, and La Turque—now regarded as some of the world’s greatest Syrah bottlings. Guigal’s meticulous vineyard work, rigorous selection, and extended barrel aging have played a major role in elevating Côte-Rôtie’s reputation globally, earning the estate countless high scores and a cult following among collectors and Rhône enthusiasts.
